Does anyone here take this AD and if you do, does it help you? I know all about the addictive side of it and it scares me a little. My dr prescribed it for me in a very small dosage. I just don't know if it's worth me taking or not. Does it help?

I have only taken it once. It was the last time I found out about contact between my WW and OM. We had an argument, I was completely distraught, and there is no way I would have been able to sleep. I popped on and I slept through the night. I didn't notice anything the next morning. I don't know what to tell you.

Xanax is NOT an AD, it's an anti-anxiety. It is to be taken when you are feeling overwhelmed or anxious or panicky or apprehensive...like in Jim's case. It is not to be taken daily like an AD. I believe it even loses effectiveness when used quite regularly. It makes you sleepy, and the effects are fairly short-lived...maybe 3-6 hours? I could count on a good three hour nap after taking 50 mg.

Sis is correct. Xanax is not an AD. Its more of a tranquilizer, AND IS HIGHLY ADDICTIVE. [color:"blue"]"Alprazolam hydrochloride, generic name for the popular anti-anxiety medication Xanax®. Xanax® is indicated for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder, and anxiety associated with depression. Xanax® (alprazolam) is sometimes used as a sleeping agent. Caution should be used, as Xanax® has been shown to cause physical dependence. Xanax® (alprazolam) has also been shown to cause seizures. Xanax® (alprazolam) can cause decreased appetite (weight loss) in some people and increased appetite (weight gain) in others."[/color] Link to excerpt above: Consumer Health Digest - Xanax

My dad died last January in a XANAX drug coma. He wasn't even THERE the last 5 years of his life because he was all doped up and out of his mind. I read it is extremely addictive. Personally, I would find a healthier way to get to sleep, such as melatonin and exercise.

O.k. You talked me out of it. I was supposed to take it for anxiety attacks I guess. I always hated taking pills. I just feel like I can ride out these anxiety attacks. Usually if I go hide and have a good cry it seems to help.

Rock,
I'm proned to situational panic attacks. Had my first one D-day #1. I took Xanax and became addicted. Thank you POS PC physican who I later fired. Lesson learned the hard way.
D-day #2 I instead exercised. The panic attacks were severe but I made myself exercise. They eventually dissapated.
Make yourself exercise. You only get one you, one body, and this situation IS temporary, I promise.

There is a non-addictive root called "kava" that works as an anxiolytic for some people. I use it myself - HOWEVER, you MUST research this thoroughly before using it, especially if you are female. Do a Google search first and read up on it. I was prescribed Xanax but never touched it. I use kava instead when I've got to have something to get me through.
RESEARCH FIRST, ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE FEMALE! Mulan

Alprazolam is a very safe and effective SHORTERM anxiolytic drug that can be habit forming. AD's are not properly used for panic attacks or acute anxiety episodes. If you are concerned about possible addiction or have an addictive personality, ask a friend/relative to hold the med for you and release doses as directed by your prescibing physician. Ask your doctor to prescribe in small quantities with no refills.

Instead of Xanax, you can take an AD called Lexapro and that is for depression and anxiety...it works wonders.

Actually I have Alprazolam. It is 0.25mg. And there are no refills. I told my doctor that I don't think I am depressed ( I think) but I just get some anxiety attacks now and then. I still don't think I will take them.

I take alprazolam to help me sleep.
Alprazolam (generic for Xanax) isn't an anti-depressant. Your doctor didn't give it to you because you're depressed, he gave it to you because you have anxiety attacks. That's what alprazolam is for. When you have an anxiety attack, take one of them, or even better, break the 0.25 mg tablet in half, and just take half of it. It will take the edge off and help get you relax. If you use alprazolam in this way--only when you have an attack and not every day--you shouldn't have to worry about addiction. And since your doctor didn't give you any refills, you'll have to get through him to get a real addiction going. It's people who use it frequently that need to worry about addiction, because it is quite addictive.
Does that make sense?

I was prescribed an AD and I was also given a prescription for Xanax. I was very careful with it and only took it when I absolutely couldn't sleep at the height of my anxiety over my H's A, and then only took a half or a quarter tablet once at night. I did not get addicted and did not use them very often and didn't finish the bottle. But I would be extremely careful. Others gave you excellent advice.
