Im here again, I need some help with myself. You can read my story on this website. Basically after all we have gone thru my wife says that she doesnt feel that I love her and I dont show her any affection. I have changed in every other way that she has wanted, and done what she has asked of me but this. She told me last nite after we argued because I didnt call her early enough that she wanted me to move out and she was going to throw all of my stuff in the front yard. I told her out of anger that if she threw all my stuff out I would tell everyone what she did (affair).

After we calmed down she said she is lonely and doesnt think I love her or care for her. I told her I still have a problem with the a. and I know some things about the a. that she will not tell me. She said she will only talk about that in front of a m.counselor. Then by the end of the converstion she backs out of it. She said she thinks it would only hurt more and not help for her to asnwer my questions.

I know I have a problem opening up to people and letting them in. She said she thinks that since my mom died when I was 11 I wont let people get close to me. I dont know if that is true or not. I guess I feel I should not have to shower her with praise and affection 24 hrs. a day. I dont have the butterflies for her like one does when dating. I have called to schedule a meeting with the mc. for me to go to friday to try to answer some of theses questions.

Imconfused...

lets try to break this down in to basics and look at the self feeding cycle you both are in that perpetuates NOT getting what each of you wants...

1.
Your wife feels like you are not attached to her emotionally and you yourself agree with this statement that she may feel this way because you yourself state you have a problem letting people in and getting close...

2.
YOU have unreseolved questions about the affair that are eating you alive...and she is unwilling to divulge the truth that you feel will set you free though she does agree to do so in theory with a counselor present...that you deserve this truth...

all right my friend...
you are miles ahead of some in recovery...

you got a BS (YOU) acknowledging your spouses need for you to be more emotional and intimate

and

you got a WS (SHE) who on some levels at least acknowledges your need to know...

and the you two have drawn lines around these issues....and let them become the exact stumbling blocks you want to get around....

back to the first one..

whether or NOT this marriage works out...(but you got two small children...and two people atleast with some type of good discourse going on....so I am very loathe to tell you to give up this ship......

but you yourself know you hold back from getting close...

for the only simple reason we all hold back..

because change is scary...
and it is foreign and unknown...

but the truth is that no matter where you end up it would pay you better to LEARN to be comfortable with opening up...

and it's really not great huge steps...but tiny simple small things you can day every day that will eventually become routine and comfortable...AND open up many many avenues paths for you...

also you look at the bigger picture of do you want your children when grown using words like withdrawn and unemotional when describing their father...
or would you prefer words like joyful and loving...
hmmmmmm
which would you prefer...

so you get out your dayplanner and you write some things in each day....

wednesday....call wife as soon as you get to the office and just say....
I just got to work...and was thinking about you on the way in ...and thought you should know I miss you...

that's it.....20some simple words...
you don't HAVE to say more
you don't HAVE to do much more...

you say talk to you soon and you hang up...

then on thursday you work an old memory of something that you and she enjoyed...I was just thinking today how much fun we had when we blah blah blah.......
that's it...
something short
somethings that shows you were thinking....

next day dig up an old CD of a song you both like and put in on in the kitchen...

help with dishes...
whatever...
and speak your admiration...
I want you to know that I think you do well with the kids in this realm and you make me proud...

whatever !!!!!!

but plan something every every day...small tiny steps...

your wife withholds the information she wants because she does not feel safe to tell you the hurt....
she fears your even greater withdrawl from her...as she already feels you have withdrawn from her and she hasn't even spoken of her hearts pain ...and the pain she has caused...

so she reacts in anger and pushes you farther...
and you withdraw and like level nine of Dantes Inferno or what ever level was the two brothers ate eachothers brain...

you two feed eachother exactly the acts that solidify your own fears...

you say if she doesn't open up and tell the truth you can't get close...

she says she can't tell you because she feels so far from you......

hold your wife...
tell her you know that even though the affair hurt you that you know it hurt her as well...

tell her that you may be angry and hurt...but that you love her.....and want her to feel safe with you....

learn to feel comfortable with speaking words that touch her soul..

we are only on this planet once my friend...
there is no other time to speak these things
to teach the heart to sing of love....

think of the environment you want for your children..
a warm home
a loving home
a safe home...

be vulnerable for and open towards you wife...and she will be vulnerable and open back to you..

not great deep psychological babbling stuff about parents and being raised this way or that...(please this does not mean that I am not sad about the loss of your mom when so young....)
but DON"T let that be your identifier...

think of the bond you want and desire.
think of the freedom there is in speaking your love rather than withdrawing and holding it back....

think of the avenues it opens...you know what you get when you don't do it...

why the ****** not try doing it...

Ark is right. Do you know that Dale Carnegie taught this in the most successful seminars ever, "How to Win Friends and Influence People"? Like charm, which is a learned behavior, being open to letting others in, and making them feel safe is the same kind of learned behavior. It just takes an awareness, a willingness and some practice.

psst Ark, just to let you know, I thought that was one of your better blatherings. No really, all your blathels are very, very good.

Are you still here Imconfused?

Thank you both for the reply. Ark that was one of the best answers that I have read on the whole fourm. That is the kind of information that I needed to learn from. I have to do some more research on opening up. I will look into the course "How to win friends and Influence People". Thanks again for the info.

imconfused2,
Please go back and carefully read both of the above quotes again and study what you have told us.

On the one hand you are telling her to open up and be completely honest to you about her affair, and then on the other hand admit that you don't open up and let people (she is thinking HER) in.

Think about that for a minute. How can you possibly ask complete honesty and being open from her and yet not have to require it of yourself? Why should she have to do what you won't do?

Here is what I have found very effective in dealing with my wonderful wife and women in general...

LISTEN to what she is saying. A mature man in a relationship LISTENS to his wife and digs to figure out what her thoughts and feeling are behind her words and actions.

Here is what I believe she is saying to you and the solution that I think will work....

She is saying that she wants to FEEL that you love her. (Simple so far huh?)

The question then becomes this... HOW can you HELP her to come to the place that she FEELS your love and affection?

It isn't always the big things with women. Matter of fact, it is very rarely the big things. How many times have I seen a woman leave a man and then he suddenly wants to turn into Don Juan and sends her flowers, rubs her feet, starts doing the laundry, the dishes, vacuum the carpet, give the kids a bath and on and on and on....

And what does he get?
"TOO LITTLE TOO LATE"
Suddenly he can't do enough after years of laying on the couch and letting her take care of everything. She slowly feels like his MOTHER. Just another kid to take care of. And us men then wonder why she left us for another man. Seems pretty understandable from her view.

Here is what you should do.

Next time you are both alone and have some quiet time try this:

"Honey, I have been doing some thinking. I was thinking about what you said to me the other night in how I don't show you enough affection and you don't feel like I love you. (this next part is very important) I want to tell you that you are RIGHT. I also want to tell you that (these next words are hard for a man) I am sorry for making you feel that way. I do love you, but I realize that I haven't shown you enough affection.

and then SHUT UP. Short, sweet, to the point. And then be quiet. No matter what she says back to you, keep agreeing with her that she has been right and you have been wrong regarding this issue. Do not defend yourself, but agree with her point of view.

Make it soft spoken and sincere. Do not bring up anything about her being honest or not being honest with you. Just DROP that part of the subject for now. This is when you will be learning how to be a mature, confident, humble, kind man who LISTENS to his wife and takes HER FEELINGS into consideration before his own.

Then in the next few weeks SLOWLY start to do little THOUGHTFUL things for her. My wife gets up every morning and has a cup of coffee ready for me with my favorite condiments in it. EVERY MORNING. And she does it cheerfully.
She doesn't make a big deal of it or a big scene about it. However, I DO notice and appreciate it.

What kind of things do I do for her? If I see a load of laundry that is finished and sitting on the stairs and I am going that way, then I take it up with me. I put the clothes away. I do it in the same spirit that she does. No big scene. I don't ask her if she knows that I was thoughtful and did it without asking. I just do it.

Learn how to be a HAPPY man. Women LOVE men who have a sense of humor and can make them laugh. Have you lost that part of you? Start to act and be a happy, mature, thoughtful man. Don't smother her by trying to suddenly becoming Mr.Mom. Just slowly and consistently apply small subtle changes to help her out with her everyday woman struggles. Come up behind her in a week or so after your "talk" and rub her shoulders for 10 seconds or so and then just walk away without a word.

Do you pick up after yourself? If not, then start doing it.
Study her and learn and observe what makes her tick. Make her life EASIER, not harder. Stop the relationship talk and start the relationship walk.

Talk kindly and softly to her. Show happiness in your life. Stop complaining. Women tire of a man who is constantly complaining and whining and moaning. When you stop these things, she will start to FEEL secure. Women who feel secure with their men, FEEL love.

Remember.. Most women relate their lives to their feelings.
Women love confident, happy, and strong men. (Emotionally strong) My wife tells me all the time that she loves it that she feels that I am emotionally STRONGER than her. Why?
Because when she goes into her "feeling" mode, then I go into my "listen and agree with her feelings" mode.

Do I have feelings? Yep. She doesn't need to know all my problems at work or my complaints about the government or how my golf game sucks right now. That is giving her unnecessary things that are not good for a relationship as a habit. I have male friends to complain to about those things. That way I can be that happy, mature man at home and my wife can FEEL my love and affection because of it..

Good luck...
