"Akeelah and the Bee"
Great movie for the entire family...particular young girls.
Starring Lawrence Fishburn, Angela Basset and introducint Keke ???? (she's excellant)
The inspiring story of a little 11 year old girl from intercity Los Angeles overcoming obstacles and competing in Spelling Bees.
Rated PG...but does contain a few swear words.
Our DD7 spent the rest of the evening memorizing spelling words and reading. Hope she continues.
Mr. Wondering
P.S. - Besides Cartoons, does anyone have a suggestion for other great entertaining, inspiring and/or educational family movies???? I got lucky finding the above movie just browsing at Blockbuster.

we also like sand lot..the first one.
the princess bride.
ma & pa kettle etc... they whinned a little at first, because they were in black and white...but once they started watching them they LOVED the old ones. and the old black and whites are always decent and clean too! SAS

The Night at the Museum was great - my husband and I took our three kids 15, 13 and 6....and all of us loved it.

SAS I got a free movie when we rented Akeelah. From the $1 movie racks ---> "Benji" She (DD7) loved that one also. Plan to rent the rest of the Benji series. My daughters favorite movie is: "Phantom of the Opera" I wish I could find a movie version of "Les Miserable" (with the singing as I know there is one wihtout it). I'm certain they filmed it at some time but no rental place ever has it. Come to think of it, I'll check the Netflix archives for it. "Little Rascals" I think she will like. Mr. Wondering

Sorry, I'm not very creative here. I like movies that we can watch together. If I left them to their own devices it would be Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh movies. YUCK.
Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark of course. My boys love the SW movies (all except Phantom Menace...I agree). We could watch them over and over...all of us. Who tires of watching good triumphing over evil? (and the symbolism relating to current life experience is not lost on anyone...)
We purchased Sky High from the cheap rack at Blockbuster...cute. And who doesn't love Shrek? Harry Potter, Cheaper by the Dozen, (new) Parent Trap, etc.
Hoot was a good one...and with an environmental message!
I would love to find some of the older Disney movies--the live action ones from the 70s--Escape from Witch Mountain, Apple Dumpling Gang, you know...the ones that used to play on Sunday nights?? Am I totally dating myself? Anyone else remember those? Prolly on ebay.

Oh, oh...for girls..."The Little Princess" was lovely! Very well done, beautifully filmed...even DS8 liked it. My mom got it for my niece and I think the DVD included "The Secret Garden" on the flip side.

And how about The Neverending Story? I watched that one with my boys over and over and over.

Anyone remember Watchers in the Woods? The "scary" Disney movie? I can't find that one. I also like the Anne of Greene Gables series.

LilSis,
I watched the Apple Dumpling Gang last week, on Turner Classic Movies, it took me back to when me and my sis were kids; man I loved that movie.
I love Shrek, what a wonderful message to all; My kid is in utter AWE of Star Wars (I can't believe that has come full circle), Spongebob Squarepants The Movie, Harry Potter, Robots, Cars, I LOOOOOOOVE Finding Nemo...
Although a little dark, the movie "Something Wicked This Way Comes" is great for the PG-13, and a little younger, group.
One of my favorites is "Liar Liar".
I love older Disney movies, too, prolly like "Mary Poppins" the best (which reminds me of another goody, "Nanny McPhee").

The "scary" Disney movie I remember was "Child of Glass." Based on the Scott Peck (I think?) book. Girl ghost in New Orleans....??
Watcher in the Woods had Lynn Holly Johnson, right?
I LOVE Anne of Green Gables! I read every book when I was a girl, and I think the series came out in late HS/college.
