Since all threads end up being about Texas anyway..... <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> We were just there, and the weather was beautiful, though a bit muggier than CA. Maybe you saw us - we were that blur going by, and not stopping much of anywhere. Long-Distance Calls
A man in Topeka, Kansas decided to write a book about churches around the country. He started by flying to San Francisco and worked east from there. Going to a very large church, he began taking photographs and notes. He spotted a golden telephone on the vestibule wall and was intrigued by a sign which read: "$10,000 a minute." Seeking out the Pastor he asked about the phone and the sign. The Pastor explained that the golden phone was, in fact, a direct line to Heaven and if he paid the price he could talk directly to God. The man thanked the Pastor and continued on his way.As he continued to visit churches in Seattle, San Diego, Chicago, Greensboro, Tampa and all around the United States, he found more phones with the same sign and got the same answer from each Pastor.
Finally, he arrived in Texas. Upon entering a church in Dallas, behold, he saw the usual golden telephone. But THIS time, the sign read: "Calls: 35 cents." Fascinated, he asked to talk to the Pastor.
"Reverend, I have been in cities all across the country and in each church I have found this golden telephone. I have been told it is a direct line to Heaven and that I could talk to God, but, in the other churches the cost was $10,000 a minute. Your sign reads 35 cents. Why?"
The Pastor, smiling benignly, replied, "Son, you're in Texas now... It's a local call." Ah, Texas! <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Spectacular.
You will never see anything like it anywhere else on earth.

I sampled some Texas BBQ in the food court. I think the place was called Cousin's.
Quite tasty.

You can thank Lady Bird Johnson for the explosion of wild flowers along the highways and byways of Texas. For years, some farmers made a good living selling wildflower seeds to the Texas Dept. of Highways, which then sprayed them on rights of way all over the place.
A field of bluebonnets is something to see, kinda like the Cherry Blossoms of Washington and some places in Japan.

I drove along the border all the way from Laredo to Van Horn, this last week. It was so beautiful, all areas I had never seen before. Shortly before we stopped for the night, near Marathon, I think, a herd of cows was wandering along the highway. At first I only saw the one black one walking right across the middle of the road. With its head down, and it so dark, at first I thought it was a giant javelina. <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" />

SB Oh yes, the bluebonnets are spectacular here this time of year. But the hill country is always beautiful even when they aren't in bloom.

DH and I just returned from a 1026 mile trek through the center of Texas. I saw lots of Texas I had not seen before.
The wildflowers were spectacular.
We went to Fort McKavett. It was amazing. It is a fort that dates back pre-civil war. There are several buildings intact and several in ruins. It was just beautiful. It is in the middle of no where. Complete silence except for a bunch of wild turkeys.
We saw huge herds of deer along the road.
We saw the terrain change so many times from the piney woods where we live to the desolute beauty of the western part of the state, hills and wild flowers, mesquite trees, live oaks, rivers, and draws.
We watched the weather turn from a beautiful afternoon to a terrible thunderstorm, woke to tornado warnings and flash floods caused us to have to slow way down, and finished out the weekend with gorgeous blue skies.
We ate great food from local eateries and sampled a variety of cuisines across the state.
We toured buidlings dating pre-civil war to buildings built finished in the last year.
We went to art exhibits in multimillion dollar art museum and in the commissary of an old fort.
It is so cool to be able to take such a trip within your very own state. Texans like to brag about Texas, don't we.

Ok, Folks a little geography trivia for you.
If you live in Texarkansas TX, you live closer to Chicago, than you do El Paso.
Anyone besides me find the County Line about as good as it gets???
