I don't know where that summer reading thread is, so thought I'd start another one.
Got this email this morning regarding the book "Sea Venture". I'm going to try and pick it up at the library.
If anyone has any other good titles to share, please do.
Also any good music CD's, Classical, Soul, Jazz

"I want to recommend a book to you. It's called Sea Venture. It was written by Kieran Doherty, an old friend of mine.
At first glance, Sea Venture is not the sort of book you'd expect me to recommend. It's not about building wealth or improving your health or increasing your personal productivity. It is a book about a group of English adventurers in the early part of the 17th century who risked everything to win a stake in the New World.
But reading this book will improve you. It will remind you of the extraordinary things ordinary people can do if they are willing to endure pain and overcome temporary obstacles.
You will think about the troubles you have overcome, the pain you have endured, the accomplishments you have achieved... and you will compare yourself to the people in this story. If you have the experience I had reading this book, you will come away from it more willing to struggle to reach whatever goals still exist for you.
Sea Venture is a dramatic, psychologically compelling story of 600 men and women who, in 1609, boarded nine ships in England and set sail for America. Their objective was to bring supplies and new life to the colony of Jamestown, which had been ravaged by disease, political mismanagement, and repeated attacks by native Americans.
The expedition's flagship, Sea Venture, was shipwrecked in a hurricane. It wound up in Bermuda, where it was disassembled and rebuilt into two ships that - after more than a year - landed in Virginia. There, Sea Venture's passengers found a town on the verge of extinction. Undaunted, they remade the town charter, established better relationships with the Indians, and replanted the colony's farms and gardens, bringing life and hope for an English presence back to the New World.
One reviewer called this a "fast-paced and colorful blow-by-blow account," and a "swashbuckling tale of adventure in the age of exploration." Another said it was exciting and dramatic. I read it in the first draft and loved it then. "Some publisher is going to buy this," I told Kieran.

If you can handle books that have infidelity in them, "The Shipping News" by E Annie Proulx is an incredible book about the self-recovery of a BS who was married to probably the nastiest WS of all time. It won the Pulitzer Prize but I can't remember what year.

Sea Venture sounds right up my alley, I will have to pick that up. Thanks for the tip. I am rereading Dickens right now and he is not as interesting the second time around!

they were a group...from ENGLAND,...which is a country in EUROPE...which lies accross the Atlantic Ocean.....
ENGLAND is known for other things than BAR-B_QUES....
all of these things exist outside of TEXAS...and is my exact point as to why there isn't enough bandwidth to even begin to melt the iceberg...of what's wrong with country...
(ICEBERGS are biggg blocks of ice exsisting in COLD (temperatures much much much colder than your usual chilling 70 degree winters in Texas....
ohhh this is exhausting....

I am rereading Dickens right now and he is not as interesting the second time around! No doubt! LOL I love anything that has to do with the sea. That's why I read "TSN" in the first place, but ended up loving it even if it wasn't really about the sea per se. New Foundland sounds down right haunting of the sea, though.

My summer reading started with:
Covariant Operator Formalism of Gauge Theories and Quantum Gravity - Noboru Nakanishi and I. Ojima
Gauge Gravitation Theory - G. Sardanashvily and O. Zakharov
My copy of the second is in the original Russian, so it’s sort of a slog.
I read with a 30 yo single malt scotch, not girly drink mint juleps, though.
While my complete collection of The Nylons cycles randomly.

Ac2ally, I was planning on reading the 2nd pretrilogy 2 the Dune series, but I can't find my copies! - they're in a box somewhere in the attic, have been since the fire.

I just read such a funny book called "A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian". Luckily, there's very little about tractors, rather it's the story of two 40ish women whose mother dies and their 84 yr old dad hooks up with 36? yr old Ukrainian woman who's after a passport. Perhaps it's because my dad's eastern european or something but it really tickled me. Good if you're not looking for brain-food.
As for music, I am totally addicted to a CD at the moment by a guy called James Morrison called Undiscovered. It's a wonderful debut CD and I can't believe you'd be disappointed. Track 6 is my personal favourite but I don't think there's a bad song on there. TT

Hi Weaver: What did you mean by "soul music"? I guess you weren't thinking "soul music" as in R&B...cause I have lots of recommendations if that were the case... Have you heard of the new genre "NEO SOUL"? One of my favorites is HEATHER HEADLEY; I love her song "IN MY MIND". <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />
