spoke to my psych. today - he called my family doc and he is putting me on antidepressents... I'm a lil worried - I don't react well to meds, esp mindaltering ones...
Since DDay I've lost 27 lbs (from 214 to 187...) don't sleep well (if at all) and don't eat. While I don't mind losing the weight (getting to 180 would be just fine) I am concerned about the rapidity of loss and decline in my general health.
anyone here have any experience? What should I expect? Any specific ones to stay away from to keep cool enuf head for plan A?

I think anti-D's are great. They really helped me. It took about 22 days, and they kicked in. I could tell the minute I woke up in the morning. There were no side effects. I took for a year, and then tapered off with no problems.
The only warning I have is what I've read, and I'm sure your doc took it into consideration. Some have sexual side effects. You have trouble reaching orgasm. That was not a problem for me, since I wasn't having sex.
I think Effexor (sp?) and Lexapro don't have that effect.

There are other side effects for some. I have occasional vertigo and hand-trembling. Insomnia.
These beat the ****** out of depression, though.

Doc put me on amitriptyline today - looks like a serious one.
A nurse friend said that's the 'serious stuff' they use on their restrained bipolars, schizos, etc.
I'm a little concerned...

anyone here have any experience? What should I expect? Any specific ones to stay away from to keep cool enuf head for plan A? AD'c could take up to 6 weeks to work. They need to develop a steady state in the system. Please take them faithfully...and do NOT alter dosages or stop taking the meds untill you discuss with your MD (Medical Doctor). The meds can be life saving and are NOT necessarily life long, BUT you have to allow them to work. If you have side effects, discuss them with your doctor (NOT HERE). There are many different antidepressant meds. Chances are, your doctor can find one that you can tolerate. Goodluck LM
Some people just don't get it, they don't get it that they don't get it.
I had the right to remain silent.......but I didn't have the ability.

I'm a little concerned... Amitryiptline is not what I would call a "serious" AD. It is an excellent choice to start with. It can perhaps also help with sleep. The main side effect could be dizziness. Goodluck LM

Make sure you work with your doctor on the dosages and side effects. If your doctor doesn't pay enough attention or keep monitoring the situation, think about seeing a psychiatrist instead.
