This divorced dad I know, who was too friendly when I was married, has asked me out. I'm not attracted to him, and I heard too many messy details about his divorce from both him and his ex. How can I say no in a nice way that he won't take personally, but such that he won't ask me out again? I thought about telling him that since my divorce is so new (3 months), I wasn't planning on doing anything socially for quite some time. He had told me he would pass my resume on to some people (?) as I am looking for a job, but I don't really care if he decides not to because I won't go out with him.

TIA for any advice.

Just tell him, "No, thank you."

If he asks you, "Why not?"

Reply, "Gentlemen never ask why."

Smile sweetly, and say, "Thanks again."

You don't owe him a reason.

RR,

Tell him that you're not ready to date, but even if you were, the two of you have just too much history together (through both divorces) to be dating partners. It would feel awkward to you to date someone who you met while he was married, and whose ex-spouse you also knew so well. Tell him you're hoping that one day you'll begin dating, and you'd like it to be someone who is separate from the pain of the past.
