Now that I'm finally back, I have a few more comments on the subject of miracles.
A ways back I quoted 1 Corinthians 12 about the gifts of the Spirit. Read the whole chapter, but here is a small excerpt from the last few verses (which immediately lead into the Love Chapter).
1 Corinthians 12
28 And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.
29 Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles?
30 Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?
31 But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.
Notice that the gift of miracles is not linked specifically to apostles, but is separate and distinct of itself. Nowhere will you find that the gift of miracles had to die out with the apostles, and would never be given again. The Bible is clear that the Spirit gives the gifts according to His will, some people only receive one, some receive several.
When Paul wrote more about the gifts in Ephesians, he made very clear how long the gifts would be with us, and would be needed. You will notice that this quote ends in the middle of the sentence, but Paul apparently didn't believe in using more than 2 sentences per chapter, lol. The rest of the sentence goes through several other subjects, but feel free to read it in the interests of thoroughness.
Ephesians 4
10 He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)
11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:
14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:
Although these verses do not specifically mention miracles, (or tongues, or interpretation, or prophecy, etc.), it does say how long we will need the gifts of the Spirit: until we reach perfection, and perfect unity with each other.
That hasn't happened yet, so we still need the gifts.
My reasoning for believing that the gift of miracles is still available (even if not widely used) is this:
1. The gifts of the Spirit were given to the church.
2. They were given with no expiration date.
3, We are still the church.
4. Until we have been perfected, we still need the gifts.
The prophet Joel foretold a revival of the Spirit in the very last days before Jesus comes.
Joel 2
28 And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:
29 And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.
30 And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.
31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the LORD come.
32 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call.
The time recorded in the book of Acts contained the greatest measure of faith the world had ever seen at that time. The early rain and the latter rain is a whole new topic, but it indicates that the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in apostolic times will be followed by another outpouring to finish the work at the end.
We have a lot of faith even now, after the trials we have experienced, but in order to make it through the last times as described in the Bible, it will take a greater faith thatn even the apostles had.
We'll just have to tune in down the road to see if I am right, but I really believe that the outpouring of the Spirit will also bring a revival of every gift of the Spirit, even those that have fallen into disuse. I would not be surprised to not only see severed limbs restored, but even the dead raised to life. I wouldn't be surprised by anything. Well, maybe I would, but nothing I can imagine. It's going to be unbelievable.
Keep watching.
