My husband has found that he doesn't like teaching, and so he has not been able to find a wide variety of jobs with his current degree. He works as a trainer for a company, which pays okay, but it would never be enough for me to stay home with kids. I work full time. I will be 30 this year, and I would like to have kids soon. Neither one of us has the best insurance, but I am thankful that we do have insurance. If I mention that other women we know are not going to be working when they have kids, he gets upset. I don't want to make him feel bad, but I have an opinion. He wants to go back to school, but he is shy. I am in the process of helping him sign up for classes towards his Master's degree. He is very smart, but he is shy and not very perseverant or motivated. Also, he does not take critcism well. How do I motivate him and encourage him, without offending him? Is it wrong to want to stay home with kids? After 8 years, should I concentrate on pursuing career advancement myself and accept his career for what it is? We moved closer to his family because he said he wanted to go back to college at a college near them. That was two years ago, and he hasn't taken any classes. I did not want to move, but I supported him.
Also, he does not like getting up in front of others, sweats a lot, and doesn't even like to call in a pizza delivery order. Should I be concerned that what seems like lack of motivation may be a cover for social anxiety?
Sometimes, I wonder if I enable a lot of the behaviors that I see. For example, he isn't motivated, so I do a lot for him, like calling the admissions office to make sure he is registered, or finding out how much tuition is to see if we can afford it. Should I stop? I'm afraid that if I don't, he will never advance in his career.
