I'd given up for 6 years and started smoking again 2 months into my A.

I have to give up again. At my interview for my new job they said the woman I will be working with gets asthma just from the smell of cigarettes. I will also have to walk past the Dean's office every time I go outside for a cigarette. Even I'm not that brave.

I don't start my new job for 2 weeks and I have next Saturday pegged for my give up day.

This time I'll do it.

Remember, you are now going through withdrawal. NC (no ciggies) is the only way!

I didn't make it. I was fine all weekend, well not really fine, but okay. By Monday morning I was a wreck. I gave in. I'm gonna have to call my doc to ask about that new stop-smoking prescription medicine. My physical symptoms were fine. It was the mental that got me. I felt like a thousand little needles were going off in my brain and I couldn't think of anything except smoking. I even dreamed about it!

Patches!!!! They're wonderful. That's how I'm going to go with it when I give up on Saturday. They worked very well for me.

PM, put on a patch and get something to HOLD with your hands, such a sugar free sucker, a stick, a straw or something. You discovered something that I was amazed to discover: it is not the physical addiction that is so hard, but the PSYCHOLOGICAL addiction. I found day 4 and 5 to be the very hardest. Once I made it through those, it got easier and easier with every passing day.

So, don't despair! Just get back on board, PM, you can do it!

p.s. I STILL dream about smoking today and it has been years. That never goes away for some of us.

Try to begin the break from ciggy's on Monday, while you are at work, so you really are only focused on it at home. This will help.

I tell you what, princessmeggy, I quit cold turkey. I tried the patch about a year before to no avail (because I didn't really commit, relied on the patch). For me, it wasn't craving that I missed, it was my buddy, my pal, Mr. Ciggy, always there for me. The emotional connection and mental connection take much more time; if you can get past the first week, it's really just the COMPANION you have to kick to the curb, like a bad friend.

Buck up! It usually takes more than one try.

PM - I hope you can find the willpower to carry on. Both my parents quit the day before major heart surgery. It took really drastic measures to sort their heads out. Both smoked since they were teenagers. My dad has lapsed but has a very controlled habit now. One after lunch and two in the evening. Mum won't have one because she has no control. She was given a human heart-valve replacement so she felt she owed it to the donor to keep her body in as good health as possible after her operation.

Does your husband smoke? Kids? Have you got good support? Really hope you can do this. Ashtrays stink. TT

Hubby is an ex-smoker for about 25 years. He hates it that I smoke and he was verrry supportive about me trying to quit. My oldest son smokes but lives away from home. My other three don't.

I think quitting on Monday at work is a good idea. I had waaayy too much time on my hands this weekend when I tried.

I'm still going to see about getting that Rx AND using the patch.

Thanks for all your support guys. It helps. I know I can do this but whew... I didn't know it would be so hard!!!

This is so true. I ditched the patch after 5 days! It wasn't the nicotine that was the issue but the psychological addiction. The only way the patch helped me was that I was AFRAID to smoke with it on. Other than that, it was of no help.

PM, I am 46 and never smoked a day in my life until entering affair land. I have been smoking like a mad person for 1.5 years now. I NEED TO QUIT!!!!

How do I do it? I have asthma, so I go to bed every night with my inhaler and wake up at least 3 times for it. It's stupid and disgusting, but I can't seem to quit. I HATE IT!!

HELP!!!
