Tony Robbins has some interesting stuff on this, Neuro Associative Conditioning (or something like that). It's fascinating how it works and does seem simple.

He said he had a client who came to talk to him about her marriage and everytime she got into her whiny, crying diatribe about the bad state of her marriage he threw a glass of water in her face. By the third time he did it she busted out laughing, instead of crying. It changed her association of pain to laughter when she thought of the problems in her marriage and she was able to come up with solutions instead of frustration.

He used it for someone afraid to get on an elevator in the same way.

His theories on personal change and how to do it our really good, I think.

Gawd, I have patients I'd LOVE to throw a glass of water on !

When you start making as much money as Tony Robbins you can, Pep.

The client didn't like it the first or the second time, and she did start yelling and saying "what are you, crazy?" and he just calmly continued without a pause "now, what were you saying about your husband?" and then she would start crying again and visibly stressed...WHAM, water in the face again.

Tony Robbins says that she was expecting him to just listen and try to comfort her like everyone else had been doing. Notachance.

I try something similar with my daughter when she smarts off at me -

I get up and give her a big, wet kiss on the cheeks and say "oh you sound like you need some love". You know how much they love those.

We have a client that told us that any time that he and his wife get into an argument that their rule is that they have to remove all of their clothes in order to continue arguing...He says that it works like a champ for them-they either decide to stop arguing and remained clothed or they get nekkid and the argument is over PDQ!

Wow, I LOVE this "therapy", and to think, it comes so naturally to me! LOL! I did that to a friend of mine when i was a teenager...I was washing dishes and she kept slapping my butt, and after telling her several times to STOP, I finally turned around and threw water in her face! very effective HA!
And I did it to my DD19 when she was about 4-5 years old and wouldn't brush her teeth. She just stared at me in SHOCK! I think she still remembers it, and she always knew not to mess with me! I love it!

I tried the "What part of NO don't you understand?" on my son when he was 5 years old and pissing me off.

He didn't hesitate: "BOTH parts!"

I do admit, *I* laughed my a$$ off for several minutes after that, so it did have a therapeutic effect on one of us, at least!

What do they do when they argue in the frozen food section of the grocery store?
