A man was sleeping one night in his cabin when suddenly his room filled with light, and God appeared. The Lord told the man he had work for him to do, and showed him a large rock in front of his cabin. The Lord explained that the man was to push against the rock with all his might...
So, this the man did, day after day. For many years he toiled from sunup to sundown, his shoulders set squarely against the cold, massive surface of the unmoving rock, pushing with all his might!
Each night the man returned to his cabin sore and worn out, eeling that his whole day had been spent in vain. Since the man was showing discouragement, the adversary (Satan) decided to enter the picture by placing thoughts into the weary mind: (He will do it every time)!
"You have been pushing against that rock for a long time and it hasn't moved." Thus, he gave the man the impression that the task was impossible and that he was a failure. These thoughts discouraged and disheartened the man.
Satan said, "Why kill yourself over this? Just put in your time, giving just the minimum effort; and that will be good enough."
That's what the weary man planned to do, but decided to make it a matter of prayer and to take his troubled thoughts to the Lord.
"Lord," he said, "I have labored long and hard in Your Service, putting all my strength to do that which You have asked. Yet, after all this time, I have not even budged that rock by half a millimeter. What is wrong? Why am I failing?"
The Lord responded compassionately, "My friend, when I asked you to serve Me and you accepted, I told you that your task was to push against the rock with all of your strength, which you have done.
Never once did I mention to you that I expected you to move it. Your task was to push. And now you come to Me with your strength spent, thinking that you have failed. But, is that really so? Look at yourself. Your arms are strong and muscled, your back shiny and brown; your hands are callused from constant pressure, your legs have become massive and hard.
Through opposition you have grown much, and your abilities now surpass that which you used to have. True, you haven't moved the rock. But your calling was to be obedient and to push and to exercise your faith, and trust in My wisdom. You have done that.
Now I, my friend, will move the rock."

That was wonderful, Neak. I am going to send it along to a few friends.
But your sig line just cracks me up. I'm all thoughtful and moved by the story and then I see "thongs" and it's all gone; I'm just smiling at the image.....

Neak,
One of my favorite stories and one I have posted here in a couple of other versions.
We aren't called to MOVE the rock, only to PUSH against it until such time as we are told to stop. At that point, He can move the stone with just a word. Moving stones is what He has shown us as something He can do at will.

Neak, I have read this many times but the truth never changes. The Lord wants our obidience. Our trust. Our faithfulness. And while he knows all to well that we have and will fail Him, He is always faithful in His love for us. The God we serve is truely an amazing God!!! PL

Sis, I had forgotten about my sig line, actually. Mom was making snarky comments when I was talking about AJ's "sticky thongs". Some SODA got spilled in his FOOTWEAR, okay???????????
Mark, I hadn't seen this till it showed up in my email, but I think I will have to reread it every few months or so. Such a good reminder.
Silent, hi!!!!!!! *waving with both arms*
Now Krusht, I said thongs BELONG on feet, not are FOR feet. That being clarified, if a dog or horse wanted to wear thongs, they would just need four of them. Longer toes would be helpful, too.
Peg, good hearing from you also. I know you are another rock-pusher right now, too. When it is time, God will finish the job you started.
This was such a timely reminder for me, because the last couple of weeks dealing with finding out that my boys have been molested again (by another child - not an adult), and having to go through all the same stuff I thought was over years ago, it is disheartening. It would be easy to think it was all for nothing, since here we are doing it all again. It is good to remember that God will bring good out of this, too, and it is just another test that I/we will go through.
On a lighter note, CPS is the investigating agency, since the crime was committed by a minor, and all parties were under 18. Ok, that may not sound like a lighter note, but try to picture my sweet Dervish being interviewed by CPS. I'm not sure whether to feel sorrier for me, wondering what humiliating things he is going to share, in his exuberance at being the center of attention, or sorrier for the poor investigator, who has no clue what he is in for.

OK, Neak, that made me cry. Not that that's much of a challenge these days, but it made me cry anyway. Now I'm going to sleep. When I'm asleep I don't have to think. Why don't I sleep all the time? Too many rocks need pushing, I guess.

I am assuming you mean the rock part, not the thong part.
It is more than just a trite saying that we must do our part, and God will do the rest.

Neak,

Just to clarify:
Please count how many feet you typed on the sig line...4 correct? My sad attempt at humor.

O goody, I love English humor.
Since 'feet' is plural, and I typed it 4 times, that would actually refer to a minimum of 8 feet, and a maximum of infinity. Oooooh, even better, English AND Math humor, lolol!
I thought you were saying I had said "thongs are for {pronounced four} feet".

Plumb the depths of the shallows of your genius, my dear children, to see what you can dredge up from the bottomless pit of cleverness lurking just below the surface.
