Hey, chica! On Bluenotes thread you said - Have you been able to cut her money off and cut off her access to your money so she doesn't plunder the assets? [color:"red"] plunder is such a good word, but not heard in this century very often. Been reading any good Revolution/Civil War books lately? ~~~plunder~~~ It reminds me of pirate ships. What a great word! I really like it. I think I'll go plunder the employees fridge now. <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> P.S. I took Spanish in college...and now I can speak absolutely nada of it. <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> It was fun though. Good for you!

Why, I like "sack and pillage" just fine, LH. Only people who read the kinds of stuff Mel reads actually speak that way, though. Upon reading it, I keep expecting to see a boatload of pirates break out a bottle of rum, and start doing the jig! LOL dat yankee gal is smoking some bad crack today! <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
I like dat word too! I have always used that word. Yes, but before long I won't be a yankee anymore, I'll be a DAMN yankee. and Mel, where I'm going is a huge shipping port, and it's also all about the history. They like their dead just as much as they like their living...the whole place is lost in time, jumping back and forth between the War Between the States, and the Revolutionary War. Right up your alley. <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Pardon a second intrusion....Longhorn just said: Ace, don't parse my words so closely. [color:"red"] Parse Other than rhyming with [censored]...I have never thought of such a word. <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> (I get your meaning LH, but I have to look it up for specifics.)

"Dunderpate" is also a Civil War vintage word, IIRC.
One of my favorites.

-ol' 2long 2long, I know that word. It is actually where the word "underpants" originated.

Right up your alley. <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> Oh yeah, I love historic places! You lucky DAWG. Now listen, when you get to the south you cannot say "pasties" or call convenience stores "party stores" or otherwise act the silly yankee, ok? And I already saw your hair so at least it is not some flatheaded foolishness so you are ok in that dept! But puhleeeeeeese powder that nose before you go ta town!! If you come to Texas, you have an open invitation to my GUEST ROOM! I have hosted others from the board and we love having company.

-ol' 2long 2long, have you studied the Civil War? This is one war I just can't seem to get a handle on because it was soooo confusing. Perhaps I am reading the wrong books, but I usually get frustrated as if I am reading a Tom Clancy novel and toss it under the bed. Can you recommend any good Civil War books? Or should I just get a Civil War for Dummies book?

Mel, I swear, that was a bad picture. Usually my nose is NOT shining like a light bulb.

Thank you! GB has an aversion to Texas, though. But hey, it's a good POJA negotiating item.
And the invitation goes both ways. I can't wait until we get setup and can start receiving company !

I think the closest "modern" equivalent 2 dunderpate would be numbskull or blockhead.
Mel:
I'm not the civil war buff, but I grew up with one. One of my best friends had read "Lee's Lieutenants" 3 times by the time he was 18. All seven volumes.
My "speed" is watching the Ken Burns series on the civil war on PBS 15 or so years ago. Much better than "The War" that's on now.

Speaking of Ken Burns' Civil War series, there was a part in there where a black historian made the comment that "Freeing the slaves ennobled what would have otherwise been nothing but a bloody conflict."
My Civil War friend was watching that, and screamed at the TV, "It still was nothing but a bloody conflict!"
War can't be "ennobled." Period. It might be "necessary", like I believe WWII was.

Maybe watching a movie FIRST would make everything FIT. Thanks for the suggestion, I will look for that series. weaver, I never thought your nose looked shiny in your pic, you goose! lol You look LOVELY in that picture! Powdering your nose is a southern tradition.

Mel, I've got a book that is a compilation of interviews with slaves from that era. Actually I have two, one is interviews with Savahanian whites, and one with former slaves. It is ghostlore interviews, but a lot of the lore stems from the days of the civil war and how it affected the different people interviewed.
They are both fascinating books. I'll post the titles after I go home and take a peek at them.
As you know Mel, Savannah is riddled with history from both of the wars, and because of the bloodiness of both, lots of spirits are at unrest. (these are their stories, not mine, so don't laugh your fool head off at me).
Also fascinating, is the huge differences between the Christian and Voodoo religions, and how they exist side to side in harmony, and color the stories/lore.
