A friend of mine who is an Avionics Tech recently went on IA. He was close to an IED explosion. As result he suffered severe hearing loss, and some issues with brain fluid loss.
He is approx 14 months from being retirement eligible, 20 year mark. Although I suspect he would have continued closer to 30.
It sounds as if the Navy is going to Med Sep him. I know he is hoping to drag his feet and reach atleast 20 before that occurs.
The way I understand it. If he is Med separated. He will receive a Separation check, and forfit his pension. All other retirement benefits will remain the same as if he reached 20, due to military related disability, Does that sound correct?
It's sad to see this guy who was funny enough to be a successful stand up comic, who did not know an enemy, walking around in such pain, and depression.
Short story that just came to mind...
This is a guy who I flew with off and on for a dozen years.
When he homeport changed to the opposite coast, we kept in touch. Occasionally I would fly missions into his new location. He would open his house to not only the shipmates he knew, but the entire crew.
His poor new wife knew none of us.
We kept them up late into the night, she woke up at 6AM to go to work, stepping over bodies all over her floor, chairs, tables, etc...
Feeling bad, we decided to cleaned their house later that morning. Inspection ready, top to bottom, then left.
She tracked us all down over the next few weeks to thank us for the wonderful gesture, and B*tch at us for emptying there entire collection of exotic tequila.
Tight group, one of which can never fly again.
Any suggestions on draging this out to ensure 20 is met?

I would tell him to get some legal advice. The Vietnam Vets of America have good on-line sources.
Some IED survivors have lasting brain damage that is not readily apparent.

Hi JKT,
I'm sorry to hear about your friend...
I really don't know all of the in's and out's... but I agree, your friend should FIGHT to stay on active duty. Don't be lulled into taking a 'medical retirement'... unless they promis him his full pay and all medical treatments at an active duty military or civilian equivalent hospital...
I delt with the VA after my last tour and it took me three MONTHS just to get an appointment to fix a cracked tooth...
I'm not affraid of dying. I know where I'm going if anything like that happens...
What I'm affraid of is Mrs. RIF having to wade through the bureaucracy of the VA health care system should I ever be seriously injured and not able to take care of myself...
Also, your friend needs to be aware of the medical disability rating... the key "cut line" is 30% or more... anything less and he's going to lose out on a lot of additional benefits...
I say fight the system as hard as he can to stay on active duty... then he can take his full retirement pension and then seek his 30%+ medical... otherwise, they're going to throw him to the mercy of an overwhelmed, and understaffed VA system that can't take care of our veterans.

Hey Believer! Your post reminded me of something else...
MTBI - Mild Traumatic Brain Injury is becoming the 'signature' wound of OEF & OIF. Make sure your friend has some sort of documentation of the IED attack in his medical records.
The Army had a 'chain-teaching' session on MTBI and Post Traumatic Stress Dissorder, PTSD... the military is finally recognizing that these symptoms often occur AFTER the service member has left the theater... It's critical that the IED attack be listed in his medical records so the medical review board will be aware of possible MTBI/PTSD...
Best of luck to your friend...

Thanks RIF,
Thats why I am concerned. The Navy, and it's mission here is not very familiar with these types of situations. But, I suspect he is being seen at a major facility in Texas.
I have NO worried he will get the 30% disablity. I am a 30% Vet. I received that off sports related knee surgery, and minor hearing loss (tennitus), due to spending way too many hours around jet engines.
As for VA... It's sad to say, I've dropped the last 2 Tricare Doc's to be seen at the VA.. The VA's support has far exceeded Tricare nightmares. I just feel guilty making appointments, knowing there or others that need that support MUCH more than I do.
There great for prescriptions. Most private practive Doc's want that more than regular office visit, to keep the checks coming in.
The VA only want to see you when you need to be seen. They mail my drugs to me.

Hey JKT,
If your friend is at Ft. Sam Houston, then they are VERY familiar with MTBI & PSTD... He should be in good hands.
Like I said earlier, my main fear is becoming a burden to Mrs. RIF and my girls if I'm seriously injured because I know what a pain the military health care system is...
TRICARE has gotten better, but it's a full time job just trying to keep up with all of the regulations and changes...
All the best to your friend...
