It is a very sad day here today! This was the biggest mass murder in the history of the state. Things like this just don't happen here, now it has.
Sometimes I wish that there was less news coverage. On the news "if there is a copycat it will happen in the next 2-3 weeks".

There is a term in Malaysia, "running amok." We use this term in English to mean someone running wild, but the original meaning was when a male who never showed any previous signs of violence or anger suddenly picks up a weapon - a sword or sharp knife - and goes on a killing frenzy, ending in suicide.
This is something that has been going on for centuries. And although "running amok" is supposedly something specific to Malay culture, I see no difference between that phenomenon and these kind of mass shootings (killing sprees/"going postal") we see in the States.

This is something that has been going on for centuries. Maybe so, doesn't mean we have to get "used to it". Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman expressed his sadness and regret over the tragic incident, ordering all flags to fly at half staff through Sunday. "Like most Nebraskans, I'm shocked. I'm stunned and I'm still in disbelief. Our entire state is grieving," Heineman said.

It appears to be something ingrained in the human psyche, or inbuilt into society... but then, so was slavery once, before it was outlawed by all civilized nations. So were blood feuds between families, before civilized nations developed legal systems. But this just illustrates that biblical passage "There is nothing new under the sun." <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

Sometimes I wish that there was less news coverage. On the news "if there is a copycat it will happen in the next 2-3 weeks". My husband called from work in Cuba to find out more about this. We were raised in Bellevue, NE (and our first son was born there)and Westroads became the big hangout area for our generation when it was built. Specially when we all started driving. I can see exactly what happened in my mind, having been to Westroads so much-- and that courtyard area on the first floor was our favorite area in Xmas time, because the decorations were so wonderful. I've been thinking a lot about my old community and hoping that this is the LAST such incedent there EVER.

Hello mojodiva, Nice to meet a fellow Nebraskan although not this way! I've been thinking a lot about my old community and hoping that this is the LAST such incedent there EVER. I am located 150 miles west, tri-city area. We do family in west Omaha. Wednesday night we waited until each one checked in. I feel so very, very sorry for the victims families! There are faces, ages and life stories out now. The governor of Nebraska has ordered flags half staff through Sunday. So senseless, so sad.

I've seen pictures of some of the victims, just waiting to see more.
Hubby graduated from Bellevue East High School and I went to Bellevue West High School til 1988(I got a GED because I had to work fulltime to support myself and our baby).
I'm still in shock over it. I'd have never expected it there.
