I liked the mellower Zep in the day.
Of course, most of it would be considered that compared 2 the noise that's so popular 2day.
Loved the first album.
Really like "No Quarter" - very dark. Good Halloween song.
And "When the Levee Breaks" - awesome drum beat!

hi 2l !
I never believed the " metal" tag applied to Zep. Their best stuff was dark, disquieting and it was THAT not drop-d tuned distorted guitars that made them "heavy".
"Gallows Pole" is like a chill wind across a winter graveyard IMO.
No quarter is a fine song. VERY fine.
BTW here's a fave song of mine, not by Zep that only you on earth might recognize :
"Doing nothing, stuck in the mud, just pumping the blood. The water level's getting low, something ugly's going to show.
If only I could touch you, I guess you'd be alarmed. If only I could touch you, I don't mean you no harm.
If only I could touch you, like the wind can touch the sail, If only I could touch you, darling, now that words have failed. Oh, flotsam still afloat, Oh, jetsam thrown out of the boat.
Oh love, my love, nothing here is what it seems. We both know it; Christ, you show it... Oh, oh my love. "
You know ?

And "When the Levee Breaks" - awesome drum beat! Yesssssssssssssssssss!!!!! This one is probably my absolute favorite!! Thanks for bringing it up!! My mom had all the Zep. She lost all of her music in a house fire, though. But no one lost their lives, so that's the best thing. Well, except that parakeet!

Yep, "thank you"!
I remember back in the day, my DD's dad was traveling all over with his band and he like to go into music stores...
And they all had a sign posted (where people would try out the guitars) that said -
"Absolutely NO Stairway to Heaven"
I guess people used that song a lot to try out guitars.

"Absolutely NO Stairway to Heaven" LOL!! It's a good song but one of the most overplayed in history on the radio! For sure!

My favorite all time song is actually "Piccadilly Square" by Jethro Tull. (I think Ian may live by you too, Bob). Ian Anderson is a very cool person. And I would give my eye teeth to see him in concert...
He apparently never got a drivers license and can't drive but has a very large collection of show cars.
And he raises those big cats. The kind that would eat you if they could.
Anyway, I had a very good friend who was an incredible musician, and music teacher. He came from a local family who were all musical genuses...also owned our local music store for years. This guy could play anything. He used to get offers for contracts... but was never interested.
And the wierdest thing about him, was that he NEVER listened to music. Except for an old 8 track he had in his car. "AquaLung"...
And he only ate hamburgers with ketchup, and pizza with pepparoni. That's it. And I mean that's ALL he would eat.
isn't that strange?
Anyway he died a couple of years ago at 50 (heart attack).
Here's to you, Jim!

Hey lady You got the love I need Maybe more than enough Oh darlin darlin darlin Walk a while with me Oh.. you've got so much.. so much
Many have I loved.. and many times been bitten Many times I've gazed along the open road
Many times I've lied.. and many times I've listened Many times I've wondered how much there is to know.
Many dreams come true and some have silver linings I live for my dream and a pocket full of gold.
Mellow is the man who knows what he's been missing Many many men can't see the open road
Many is a word that only leaves you guessin Guessin 'bout a thing you really ought to know..
Man... that one hits me square between the eyes today.

JJ, whenever me and my dwindling band of very close friends and brother get together we sometimes share the great luxury of a single malt scotch. We spend a moment before sipping , looking into each others eyes and remembering those who would not enjoy the sting of fine malt on their lips again. And we toast : " absent friends" and drink deeply; respectfully. And it always waters our eyes a little before the laughter comes. And it is RIGHTEOUS.

Thanks Bob.. as a musician myself, music has always held a special place in my heart.
Zeppelin especially has walked me through many a rough stretch.. I remember the first collections I purchased on vinyl (yes.. I'm 30 but I -love- the sound of a needle on platter.. so warm) were Led Zep and Pink Floyd.. purchased -everything- I could get my hands on... only a handful of albums short of full collections on both..
So hey.. as an aside.. if you know anyone who has a pristine copy of Pink Floyd: More.. and I should replace my copy of Meddle.. the Echoes side is totally worn out... and Led Zeppelin III.. I could stand to replace that one too

Sorry for the tj but Weaver, did you know the Osmonds are doing a reunion tour of the UK starting next May.The whole lot of them - Donny, the brothers and Marie. I've still got my scarf I won in a newspaper competition aged 10.
The Police are coming our way. Should be a fun night out.
Bob, I reckon you must have a few unwritten songs in your head. Career change?? Your posts are often quite poetic.

Oooo! My ears were burning.
Josie, I just realized I never suggested you get Sufjan Stevens' CD called Greetings from Michigan The Great Lake State. It's a thing of beauty, that record.
I'm nostalgic for cruddy old Michigan after seeing my grad school friends at AGU this week.
ETA: LZ's version of When The Levee Breaks is the All-Time Number One Best Rock Song Ever. I mean, if I could take just one song to the desert island...

Is a duck's butt waterproof? From same album (vinyl, doncha know) "Saturday is shopping day I drive my car but there's no place to park it, No respect for Superman in supermarket. Guess there must be trouble but I've not been alerted; Looking 'round the store, it was all deserted And I'm stranded here with my empty basket, So full of question, but nowhere to ask it. Chorus: By the one way out, strange voice shout, "Don't let that good man out!" "Have a wonderful day in our one-way world, One way, one day; Have a wonderful day in our one-way world, One way, one day; One-way man, one-way mind, get along with mankind." There's an old man on the floor so I summon my charm, I say, "Hey Stormband, has there been an alarm?" He says "Here, they're sellin' out eternal youth, They all got afraid, 'cos I'm the living proof. My name is Einstein, do you know time is a curve?" I said, "Stop, old man! You've got a nerve, 'cos there's only one rule that I observe: Time is money, and money I serve!" -ol' 2long
