I am being somewhat vague, but that is the gist of my sitch. Has anyone had luck using GPS externally mounted ie. not having access to the keys or vehicle interior? Of course, it will be easily retrievable as compared to gaining interior access, then not being able to recover it.

I've seen them placed under the plastic bumper skin.

I watch, and am as a sparrow alone upon the house top.

They make very small ones that have a strong magnet, ideal for sticking on vehicle frames. The ones I'm familiar with have a USB plug on them, so they aren't good for live tracking, you retrieve the unit and download the data to a computer program.

Something like this: http://www.brickhousesecurity.com/h4100.html

I have never used that company or anything and am providing the link merely as an example.

I had good success using a prepaid nextel cell phone, which provides live real time tracking online.

I believe some devices have strong magnets and will stay on quite well. For weeks, months. Some are real-time viewable from the Internet.

One concern with the nextel phones is battery life, maybe only 14 hours or so...

14 hours TOPS on the Nextel phone. I was getting more like 10 hours with my phone, I'm sure it varies by model and battery. I did get an adaptor to connect it straight to the car battery, which would have made it very effective, but my situation changed before I got it installed so I never used it.
