Interesting question. My take is that whereas conservative views are usually supported by logic, liberal views are usually supported by feelings. As you can't debate feelings, she shuts down when you try this.

My family is libertarian and I am fairly liberal. I always enjoy hearing their views but have a hard time explaining why I don't think people should starve if they aren't prepared to work so I just tell them I think differently because I am a foreigner

It does not sound like conservative vs. liberal to me as much as it does a difference in the way you process information.
Do you know about Myers -Briggs personality types?

I don't understand. What does being a liberal or conservative have to do with how you raise your child? Can you give some specifics?

fwiw, if you're talking about Democrats and Republicans for your liberals and conservatives, and I assume you are, I have many friends in both camps. I get emails from both groups. The emails I get from the liberals are almost always about an upcoming meeting with a candidate, a news article about an issue, stuff like that. Nearly every single piece of email I get from my conservative friends is of the type that shows Hilary with a pig snout, or touting Obama as a gun-toting Muslim terrorist, or some cartoon making fun of Democrats in general.

So, from my experience with these people over the last 30 years, I would have to give the liberals more credit for being respectful and open-minded.

It sounds more like you're upset at her unwillingness to compromise and that she is not a conservative, so have therefore determined that her 'liberalism' is ruining her.

I have to agree w/ cat.
I don't think what you are complaining about is liberal/conservative issue.. but, more along the lines of a thinker/feeler issue.
