Does anyone know if there is some type of status of limitations on filing for child support (retroactive) in the State of Tennessee? My daughter is 18 and I am interested in pursuing the OM (dirtball) for past child support. It seems he wasn't interested in the least in her until she turned 18 and all the sudden he wants to be a "part of her life".
My daughter knows nothing about him at the moment. I'd do anything to keep him out of her life. I'm desperate. Lisa
Lisa - Hi. Just wanted to let you know someone saw your post. I am a lawyer in another part of the country and I don't know anything about the statute of limitations for filing a petition for child support (or retroactivity of a court order for child support)in Tennessee. (Seems to me there should be no limitations period as with murder charges!) If you were married to someone else at the time your daughter was conceived you may also have to overcome some legal presumptions as to who the birthfather is. I'm sure it would be fairly simple to find out the answers to your questions by calling your local bar association for a referral to a family law attorney - many will provide a free initial consultation
Better yet, try calling the family support division of the district attorney's office in your county. Here the county district attorney will file on behalf of the child against the deadbeat parent. Hope this helps somewhat.....Just curious, but why did you wait until your child was 18 to think about a petition for child support?

Simone: Thank you for your response. I'll call the district attorney's office today. The reason I waited this long is because I never wanted anything from this man, he's a jerk and he didn't want anything to do with my daughter. (My husband stepped up to the plate and raised my daughter.) However, now that she's 18, he and his daughter's have decided they want her in their life. If he'd just leave us alone, I'd never consider doing this. What right does he have to walk into her life now? I guess I just want him to have some consequences to his actions. Thanks.
Solid: I'm assuming you mean the name Taylor? No, that's not his name. This man lives in West Tennessee. Lisa
