Welcome to the wonderful world of the internet Sheba!<P>When you send an email, it may get routed many, many different ways.<P>From your house, to the ISP is a straight shot. From there, it may go around the world a number of times before it shows up at its destination. Even if you send an email to the guy next door!<P>If one of the computers in the middle is down or acting funny, the email may get re-routed somewhere else. Then again, it may not and just sit there until the system figures out what to do with it.<P>Have you seen these games with a piece of wood has a bunch of pegs sticking out? You drop a ping pong ball in a hole at the top (your house) and it bounces all over the place until it comes out the bottom (the recipient). No, not just WebTV. At my work sometimes it may take 20 minutes to send an email to the guy sitting 5 feet away from me. And it only has to go through 1 router & 1 server & back.
