I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith.
2 Timothy 4:7

Bill Bright, founder of Campus Crusade for Christ, experienced the ultimate graduation, to heaven, on July 19, 2003. And other than my parents, no person has had a greater influence on my life. My mind fails trying to lay a yardstick beside the many, many ways he shaped and influenced me.

Shortly before his homecoming, I wrote him a personal letter--a very inadequate attempt at expressing how much he meant to me. Among other things, I thanked him for the following:

* Modeling what it looks like to be a bond slave of Christ
* Constantly reminding me that our God is not small
* Having a great sense of humor and for being real
* Never thinking about quitting--never!
* Allowing me the freedom to disagree
* Making tough decisions
* Telling me there is no amount of money that God won't give the man who doesn't allow it to stick to his fingers
* Allowing God to use him to build a platform that so many could follow, using it to reach nations for God's glory
* Being committed to his wife, Vonette, for more than 53 years--for running the race and finishing well

Pulmonary fibrosis kept him in constant pain during his final years. Yet amazingly, these years were some of his most productive. "It's a win-win situation for me," he said. "If I live, I go on serving Him. If I die, I'm in heaven with Him."

I am a better man for having known and worked for Bill Bright for more than 30 years. How we need more friends and mentors with that kind of faith and life!

Of these nine statements of Christian character, which one or two are you most eager to exemplify?

Pray
Pray that God would grow His nature and character in you so that the first thing people see in you is your faithfulness--and your faithful Lord.

Somebody was up a lot earlier than me. I'm still wiping the sleep out of my eyes. smile

Quote
Our Lord Jesus Christ came to this world as the unwearied servant of man's necessity. He "took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses," that He might minister to every need of humanity. Matthew 8:17. The burden of disease and wretchedness and sin He came to remove. It was His mission to bring to men complete restoration; He came to give them health and peace and perfection of character.

Varied were the circumstances and needs of those who besought His aid, and none who came to Him went away unhelped. From Him flowed a stream of healing power, and in body and mind and soul men were made whole.

What a privilege we all have to share in this work....

Let me see if I understand this....thndrnlightning is Neak's mother. Neak and AJ are married.

Also, dervish is Neak and AJ's child. (BTW, whirling dervish is what I used to call my son around the age of 3. He had temper tantrums on the floor which mercifully ceased at the age of 4)

Is this correct or am I mistaken in my assumptions? Someone please let me know!

You're right, PK.

Mom = T&L
DH = AJ
Sis = Neaksis

AJ & I have 3 kids, Mr. C (age 11), the Princess (age 9 4/5), and boy oh boy that Dervish (age 7 only by the grace of God).

Then Neaksis has 3 kids also. (They are adopted.) I forget what we nicknamed her oldest (age 14 now, I think). He's been gone for 1 1/2 years at a wonderful school for troubled children, having narrowly escaped sterner juvenile detention. They have been the making of him. Then there is Val, short for Valkyrie, who is 12 25/26. Can't remember what we had nicknamed her youngest, either. He's 11, and only a few weeks younger than Mr. C. Back when they were small and their biodad was incarcerated, we visited our grandparents' church, where we had gone as kids and most people still recognize us. One of her kids turned around to the prim elderly ladies behind us during the greeting time and informed them, "Our dad's in prison." The look of mingled sympathy and horror the ladies turned on Neaksis was priceless, and makes me laugh even yet.

My SIL used to post sometimes on Mom's old thread from before the change, but I forget her user name.

Plenty more family members have been mentioned over the years, but that covers kids and all family members who are posting or have posted. (The Dervish has posted more than once under my user name.)

Technically, Neak, you have 4 children, with 3 living. Let's not sell Dillon short, here. Although he never made it to the point of having his own mocking nickname, he was a real member of the tribe, nevertheless.

Ah, out of the mouths of babes. My children are old now (20 and 17), but I remember their younger years fondly. My daughter got me into trouble one day:

As a SAHM, I was generally the one who drove the kids around to their activities, visiting grandma, grocery store, baby group, etc. I thought that I was pretty good about keeping my irritation at other drivers to a minimum. That illusion was shattered one day when my husband took my daughter out to do errands while I stayed home with my son. While they were driving, a car cut my husband off and he had to slam on the brakes. He muttered some choice words under his breath. Then a little 3 year old voice piped up from the backseat, "Daddy, was that an @$$#*!%?"

She was always precocious at learning new words and trying them out.

Thanks for the who's who on MB in your family. I wasn't sure, but had to ask!

The 9/20 "it is Finished" teaching could just as easily be called "Finishing Well." It is worth the listen.

I'm very sorry for your loss. We have friends who lost their oldest son at 8. The mom is pretty upfront about having two children, one living. It's very important for her be able to talk about her son in heaven. The dad says he has one son, and I think it brings him pain to speak of his son who's not living. They're both right.

Great, now everybody knows my name. stickout

Did I mention just by chance, and completely spontaneously, that the original post on this thread was very good? I do hope that at the end of my life on earth, however it may end, that somebody might say something that nice about me.
