Canada: Recall of Halloween Candy Possibly Contaminated with Melamine

(U) On October 8, 2008, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued a recall for Sherwood Brands Pirate’s Gold Milk Chocolate Coins, UPC 0 36077 11240 7, Lot Code 1928S1, due to contamination with the chemical Melamine. The candy is sold nationally through Costco Stores and may also be sold as bulk packages or individually at various dollar and bulk stores in Canada.1 Sherwood Brands assures none of these coins have been shipped to the United States.2

(U) Melamine is a small, nitrogen-containing chemical used in a number of commercial and industrial applications including: as a binding agent, flame retardant, a part of the manufacturing process of cooking utensils and plates, plastic resins, a component in paper, paperboard, and industrial coatings.

(U) Melamine if ingested in sufficient amounts may result in kidney stones, kidney failure and death. Symptoms and signs of melamine poisoning may include irritability, blood in the urine, little or no urine, signs of kidney infection, and high blood pressure. There have been no reports of illnesses related to Melamine in the United States or Canada. Melamine is not approved for direct addition to human or animal foods marketed in the United States or Canada.

(U) The FDA is also advising consumers not to consume the following products because of possible melamine contamination:

*YILI Brand Sour Milk Drink
*YILI Brand Pure Milk Drink
*Blue Cat Flavored Drinks
*White Rabbit Candies
*Mr. Brown Mandehling Blend Instant Coffee (3-in-1)
*Mr. Brown Arabica Instant Coffee (3-in-1)
*Mr. Brown Blue Mountain Blend Instant Coffee (3-in-1)
*Mr. Brown Caramel Macchiato Instant Coffee (3-in-1)
*Mr. Brown French Vanilla Instant Coffee (3-in-1)
*Mr. Brown Mandheling Blend instant Coffee (2-in-1)
*Mr. Brown Milk Tea (3-in-1)
*Infant formula manufactured in China 3

Gee, all we had to worry about on Halloween growing up was razor blades in apples.

Snopes.com says this one is true. The candy was manufactured in China and has the same problems as the tainted baby formula. I love snopes.com. I keep going there to check election rumors and can't wait until election day.

I am not voting early. I am also not voting for anyone who runs on character while being married to a homewrecker! One newspaper columnist said a certain candidate had it all...." a beautiful rich wife who owns a beer company." I say to that columnist that there are plenty of men who could have had something similar but chose instead to stay the course and make something of their marriage. Those are the men that have it all.

Snopes also says the company claims the tainted product was ONLY distributed in Canada.

Starving, initially I was insulted that you should think I would post something I absolutely did not believe was accurate. Considering I received the information directly from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, I knew how unnecessary your verification was. I got over that. Besides, I would rather trust TBI on this than trust snopes.

One of these days, waaay in the future, maybe we can discuss the political thing. The way I put it was way too negative but I was in a bad mood and had just fired off a letter to that columnist saying how offensive I found his comments. So many people it seems don't think twice about glorifying infidelity.

It is my problem and my issue. I have probably voted for many men who cheat on their wives. I probably have male friends who cheat on their wives but I don't know about it. I hold my exH much more responsible for his infidelity than OW. However, there was something really distasteful to me about the possibility of an "affairage" couple inhabiting the White House.

Please don't flame me for saying that. This is not the time to discuss it...However, I am sure it won't be the last time we will face a hard choice like that...and for me it was difficult. No matter how much good she had done in her life..it was still a weird concept, the first lady homewrecker.

Hey, it's ok. I felt nauseated by both major party tickets. But, again, that is my issue. It's too bad all those other candidates dropped out too early. There were far better choices that didn't make it.
