Rosy - If they have a "no-spouse" party next year, couples could get together on their own for an evening of dinner/dancing, or whatever sounds fun....
Scheduling it for the same evening might prove a point!
Consider how hard it is to change yourself and you'll understand what little chance you have in trying to change others.

We just went out for dinner tonight with another pilot and his wife and 8 of the other pilots. So now I've met some of the guys hubby works with and had a lovely night out (albeit listening to pilot talk all night and juggling the baby and helping my 4 year old colour) but it was so nice to get out of the house on an evening and get dressed up nicely for my husband
