My sons are investing now. They are in their twenties - but they do it monthly so the price is averaged.

10% tax? Thats it... Are you sure?

I know that early withdrawal of a 401K typically means heavy penalties, to the tune of 50% loss.

I also know you CAN borrow money against a 401K or IRA. Consider moving ALL of this 401K money to an IRA "IF" you are going to take the pentalies hit. Then borrow "at low interest" against that fund.

Sorry folk, but claiming the SM is no place for retirement money is very nieve. Also Hindsite is 20/20...

My investments balanced between stocks, bonds, funds, have taken a beating. But I'm a 40 something, and I know the money is long term and will be back.

Investing now or soon is a huge advantange "If you have the money".

I would love to see what I could do with 100K over 10 years, (starting today). I salivate at the thought!

Companies like General Electric (GE) are trading at the same plrice today, as 15 years ago...GE will not go under, GE pays dividends.

Buying blue chips like GE, agressive funds, and bonds, Is proper 30's/40's retirement investing (If you have the stomach for it).

Call Fidelity (free) or any investment firm, make sure you know what your going to lose by pulling cash from this 401K early...
