...has anyone seen it?
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0416508/

I saw it on DVD with some friends. I have never been a fan of love movies but I kind of liked it.

A brief summary of the plot is that the 20-year-old Jane Austen meets a young man, Tom, who knocks her off her feet. Unfortunately he has a bad reputation and no money and her parents want her to marry another respectable and wealthy (and boring) man instead.

Jane elopes with Tom but on the way she finds out that he has been providing for his sisters and brothers with an allowance from his uncle. She realizes that he will not be able to feed them if he runs away and she returns to her family instead.

What struck me when I watched the movie was a small speech from Jane when she found out about Tom's family. I checked the IMDB and it says
"...there will be no way for Tom to provide for everyone. She believes that if she marries him, the guilt she feels will gradually erode their love."
She said more, I don't remember exactly but it was something like if they would destroy Tom's family, they could never be truly happy. He would fall and take everyone with him.

I am biased but to me those lines apply to an affair as well. Can you be happy if you have destroyed a family?

Actually, I would have considered the respectable man her parents wanted her to marry. He was boring, but as her father pointed out, she could easily have fixed him. grin
