I read something in my local newspaper earlier this week that may save people a lot of anxiety in terms of these "hang-up calls."
We all get them, and we all think we know what they are. However, they may not be what we think. Telemarketers often use random dialers that dial, say, 10 numbers at once. Whichever one gets an answer first, gets connected to a rep. That's why, when you get calls from telephone solicitors, it often takes a few seconds for the person on the other end to talk.
If you are one of the numbers dialed that DOESN'T get connected to a rep, the machine will hang up....and to you, it sounds like a hang-up call.
I saw a posting here about them, and figured I'd pass this info on.

Well, I know that most of my hangup calls came from the slug, because I finally found out where it was she was calling from over the summer. Then I got caller ID, and I no longer answer any calls unless I know who is calling me (of course, that was about the time she stopped calling because she changed jobs).
------------------
terri
I believe in miracles...

See, I'm incognito and nobody recognizes me, right?
Anyhow ... you ladies made me laugh. But, I didn't let my husband know I had caller ID for quite some time. I used to hide the little receiver thingie whenever he was over. So, as much as I'd like to attribute the end of my hangup calls to my caller ID, I believe it was due to the fact that the slug now has the exact same schedule as "her man" (as she refers to my husband), and therefore knows where he is at all times.
------------------
terri
I believe in miracles...

In my case, Peg, the hang up calls went on and on during the summer..... We went on vacation, and that was interrupted because my husband's aunt and uncle died.
We drove from CA to WI straight through, and as soon as we got into his aunt and uncles town, and stayed at their house, wouldn't you know it? The hang up calls were there too.... But only when I answered the phone.
So, my husband was 'dumbfounded'. I ordered the caller ID the next week. Dummy me, I told him about it. Hang up calls have completely stopped. Totally.
Smart telemarketers, huh? They know where you are...... hmmmmm......

I too went with the hidden caller ID because of the hang ups and grumbling noises left on the answering machine. I found out it wasn't my now x, but a friend of my sons who apparently didn't like leaving messages.
