I have been having a really hard time lately accepting that my wife is going to divorce me. I have been crying uncontrollably. I don't sleep very well, normally waking up 5-10 times per night. It seems like I am hardly getting any sleep. Most of the time I am tossing and turning. Yesterday I cried through my entire counseling session. After it was over I was shaking uncontrollably and was having a hard time catching my breath. Is this what people call an anxiety attack?
I am on 20mg of Prozac per day. This is supposed to help the depression, but I have heard it can cause insomnia and anxiety. Anyone experience that? I have a prescription for Xanex. I hope that helps.
rhooks4
[This message has been edited by rhooks4 (edited August 18, 1999).]

Remember that Prozac takes weeks before you will notice effects, whereas Xanax works immediately. Take the Xanax when the overwhelming feelings of anxiety get to you. Talk to your doctor about your symptoms. If you have been on the current dosage of Prozac for a while, your doctor should know what you are experiencing.

I've been on the Prozac for only 10 days or so. I'm starting the Xanex tonight.
Hi rhooks4,
I'm not sure if what you had yesterday was an anxiety attack or just simply plain mental exhaustion. Xanax would have been wonderful for a time like that. Luckily, I was able to use some in the really horrible moments after discovery. I would go ballistic and that would calm me down almost immediately. It's scary to think what those times would have escalated into, had I not had the Xanax available.
As far as the Prozac, I'm not sure how long you've been on them, but they could surely exacerbate your anxiety induced insomnia. Something that would probably be there to some degree with or without the Prozac. They also take a while to work, and if you don't see a marked improvement, speak with your doctor. Sometimes it takes many tries to find the right medication. It surely sounds like you could use something. I'm sorry you're feeling such despair. I'm sure everyone hear would take it away if they could. You'll be in my prayers.
------------------
The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. Give the Prozac some more time. And take the Xanax when you need it.
I've been in your situation and, for me, the symptoms were not side effects from the meds but part of the depression. The meds really are amazing. Do talk to your doctor if your symptoms are not relieved.
Also, rhooks4, even if you get a divorce, this is not the end of the world. You will survive this. You are not "going crazy". You will get through this!
[This message has been edited by TryingAgain (edited August 18, 1999).]
