Hi Tetrahedron, I've only done the ldr thing with my hubby for short stretches, the longest being 3 months but we actually found we got a lot more intense communication going through email and messaging because the day to day stuff was kind of out of the way.

Its rough though, what is your situation? My hubby was away doing pilot training so was free in the evenings and we had our webcams on every night for hours.

I've been in one for years.....the understanding is that should either of us find someone more compatible but closer, we are free to explore that option. Neither of us have found anyone. I've had a date or two since I met my bf but they were highly incomparable...

How have we made it work for years? I don't know...we talk daily. We see each other as often as possible.

Since we both work - in different fields - and have different interests, it's not always easy. And, we both have children with our former spouses and neither of us could move the children and neither of us would move without our children. So, we value each other's commitments to that part of our lives.

I think we have been so successful because we are so open with our talking to each other (no webcams and no relocation to date so those are NOT necessary). This isn't to say the relationship hasn't waxed and waned at times. But, it's working for us.

We both have full lives and we don't NEED a partner to feel rich, blessed, and fulfilled. We're cool with just being ourselves and not buying into needing a date every weekend.

Why would I want to date a zero when I have a hero....why would he want to date a hot chick when he has a princess?

Prolly our most important rule is, always have a phone call at bedtime. Different time zones and different shifts requires flexible definitions of "bedtime" but still, a phone call when at least one of you is just going to bed, to say goodnight.

It will still be difficult. There's other things you can do also. But for us, the goodnight phone call was a biggie.
