Spaghetti trees: The BBC television programme Panorama ran a famous hoax in 1957, showing the Swiss harvesting spaghetti from trees. They had claimed that the despised pest, the spaghetti weevil, had been eradicated. A large number of people contacted the BBC wanting to know how to cultivate their own spaghetti trees. It was, in fact, filmed in St Albans.



Left Handed Whoppers: In 1998, Burger King ran an ad in USA Today, saying that people could get a Whopper for left-handed people whose condiments were designed to drip out of the right side. Not only did customers order the new burgers, but some specifically requested the "old", right-handed burger.



Taco Liberty Bell: In 1996, Taco Bell took out a full-page advertisement in The New York Times announcing that they had purchased the Liberty Bell to "reduce the country's debt" and renamed it the "Taco Liberty Bell." When asked about the sale, White House press secretary Mike McCurry replied tongue-in-cheek that the Lincoln Memorial had also been sold and would henceforth be known as the Lincoln Mercury Memorial.



San Serriffe: The Guardian printed a supplement in 1977 praising this fictional resort, its two main islands (Upper Caisse and Lower Caisse), its capital (Bodoni), and its leader (General Pica). Intrigued readers were later disappointed to learn that San Serriffe (sans serif) did not exist except as references to typeface terminology.


Metric time: Repeated several times in various countries, this hoax involves claiming that the time system will be changed to one in which units of time are based on powers of 10.



Smell-o-vision: In 1965, the BBC purported to conduct a trial of a new technology allowing the transmission of odor over the airwaves to all viewers. Many viewers reportedly contacted the BBC to report the trial's success. In 2007, the BBC website repeated an online version of the hoax.

My kids already got me, having changed the bags of cereal in all the boxes. It didn't click why Honey Bunches of Oats was coming out of the Heart to Heart box until I poured the milk.

Now I have to think of something before the little tricksters wake up...

I still think the best MB hoax was the "rabbit died" thread. I think that was 2005 or or 2006. I remember Mimi being quite upset by it, LOL!

I played a BAAAAD on on my husband when he and I were first dating. He had just had some dental work done and was a pretty hurtin unit. So I had my girlfriend from work call and say that she was from the dentist's office and that they had actually performed the work on the wrong tooth and that he needed to come back in. There was dead silence on the other end of the phone....my girlfriend and I were ROLLING!!!

My favorite was when I revealed to MBers that fellow poster "susan" and I were having a lesbian love affair.

Mimi REALLY hated that one.

I got people going pretty good on face book right now......duckie's (fiance) best friend just called me in a panic.

My son was DUE to be born on April 1st 1982, but being a wonderful mother, HELD OUT until April 4th so he wouldn't be a little April Fool! I think he owes me big for dat!

I don't understand why he gets the birthday present when I was the one who had to do all the work?

Spartan just called to let me know that he was home packing to go out to the racetrack for work. He'll be back on Sun.

I wish he were April Foolin' me.

Maybe he'll surprise me and swing by my work to give me a kiss on his way out.

When I was p.g. with our first baby, on April Fool's Day I told my husband that my OB required the father to get a physical as well, (to make sure all was well and there were no "outstanding" concerns for the baby's health)...INCLUDING a proctology exam!

I will never forget the look on his face, or watching the blood drain from it. He gulped HARD and said "FOR REAL?!?!? I don't think I can do that!".

This sort of exam is his BIGGEST FEAR and he completely believed me. It was hysterical and we still laugh about it today.

<P.S. He just turned 40 and his first question to the doc was "Uhhhh...do I have to have one of THOSE exams now that I'm 40????". He's been dreading turning 40 for this reason!!!!>

I LOVE April Fool's Day! It kinda crept up on me this year so I wasn't as prepared as I'd expected. For instance, I COMPLETELY forgot to bring in fake/plastic donuts & put them in the kitchen.

Anyway, several random shenanigans took place throughout the day but my best work came towards the end. Had one of my guys call a "client" who was "really upset & needs you to call her back right away" Her name? Myra Mains. The number? Well, what we gave him was a Mortuary! HA! He loved it!
