Does anyone know how Freedom of Information requests work.
My wife works at the YMCA and affair #1 was with a fireman. Both used work phones to carry out the affair and I would like to see their records. I think probably both places may be subject to FOIA.

How do you request them
How long does it take
Who provides the info - the place of business or phone company

Thanks

You write a certified letter to the "Custodian of Records" for both places. In your re line include: Freedom of Information Act - Request for Documents

Tell them specifically what records you want by name and date "pursuant to the FOIA" and quote the relevant statute (if you have it). Provide them with a self-addressed and stamped envelope for the return of the documents. Call ahead and see if there are any fees for requesting the docs (i.e., research and copy charges.)

You may get entangled with their legal department if you say "why" you want the records.

Hope this helps.

You also must know exactly what you are looking for. They will not allow a fishing expedition. Be specific.

You can get your states FOIA online, just print it and send a copy with the request. You can also send prescendence of other cases with it.

I'm no good at understanding all terms of legal documents at first glance. Does this FOIA mean that if a person works for a goverment agency we possibly could get a copy of their phone records? What about emails? This would be good information to know if so! I will have to read more later when I have the time.
