In case anyone hasn't seen this... Dr Seuss explains why computers sometimes crash:(Best read out loud...) If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port, and the bus is interrupted at a very last resort, and the access of the memory makes your floppy disk abort. Then the socket packet pocket has an error to report.
If your cursor finds a menu item followed by a dash, and the double-clicking icon puts your window in the trash; and your data is corrupted cuz the index doesn't hash, then the situation's hopeless and your system's gonna crash.
If the label on the cable at your house, says the network is connected to the button on your mouse, but your packets want to tunnel to another protocol, that's repeatedly rejected by the printer down the hall,
And your screen is all distorted by the side effects of gauss, so your icons in the window are as wavy as a souse; then you may as well reboot and go out with a bang, cuz sure as I'm a poet, the sucker's gonna hang !
When the copy of your floppy's getting sloppy in the disc and the microcode instructions cause unnecessary risk, then you'll have to flash the memory and you'll want to RAM your ROM. Quickly turn off the computer
and be sure to tell your Mom!

I am coming late to this, so I may not be giving you any new answer, but... the power light went on. But nothing on screen. And it didn't even appear to have the central processor running. The green power light was on but not blinking as it does when the computer is processing info.
So now what? Is it possible to actually attach the laptop to my desktop and try to pull the files off that way? Can I still attach it to the portable hd? Is there something else I need to do? It sounds like your laptop power supply is insufficient to power the external USB drive. You can verify this by plugging in a USB drive that has its own AC power source; if it works, that tells you your computer power supply is too weak for your USB drive. SOLUTION 1: Network the laptop and the desktop via Ethernet, using the RJ-45 jacks on each machine. Set the drives you want to copy from as shared. Heck, share them on both computers so you can push or pull the files. Then you can just drag and drop a copy. They will not move from the original folders; you will still have those.

1. Recording music straight to your PC ----------------------------------- Plug the microphones into the sound card of your computer and use the basic built-in software to capture it to a .WAV file. Just as in recording to tape, though, the quality depends on the type of microphone, placement, the room, wall materials, and gain settings on the microphone. 2. Recording music not-so-straight to your PC --------------------------------------------- If you have a stereo system, connect the microphones to the audio inputs on the back of its amplifier. Then pass that sound through the amplifier, mix it for bass and treble, and out the Audio Out jacks connected to your PC audio card. Here is a site with all the steps... http://www.ramelectronics.net/howto-pc-audio.ep

Retread, You are correct for anything that can be picked up with a single mic or something that has already been recorded. Most musicians want more capability and so they opt for a PC based recording studio package like this one or something similar. I am still of the opinion that recording to a digital recorder like one of these can be superior to all but the best and most expensive PC based mixer/recording studio packages. Some of the ones without built in mixers can take their feed directly from a front of house (FOH) mixer and can make fantastic recordings of live performances. When it comes to audio, nothing beats real professional equipment. If your intent is to record the kids playing the piece they just learned in music class, a mic into the PC works fine. If you intend to make demo recordings or want to market your music, it needs to be very high quality with post performance mixing and EQ capabilities. Mark

Mark, I was assuming that she had a stereo audio card with two inputs, if she wanted to record stereo music.
I would assume that anyone who wanted to make a demo CD would record it onto 4-track tape through an equalizer, then mix it down to 2 tracks of tape or direct to CD. I have some friends who are in bands and own a large website for bands and clubs, so I should ask them what the latest professional equipment is.
But I don't even have my computer attached to my stereo. One of these days, I will get around to cutting CDs off all my twice-played vinyl. I don't own an MP3 player. My new car is the first one to have a CD player. My kids think it is funny, for someone who built systems for Atlantic and Swan Song back in the 1970s. I was showing them my old Revox 77 the other day... don't make them like that anymore.
---- more ------------ Hey, that Musicians Friend site has neat stuff, and cheap, too. I like Korg and Yamaha. Their 16 and 32 track units look like the way to fly, but some of them for $250 to $500 have a lot of capabilities.
Oh, I don't suppose I need to tell you I don't have TEVO, no DVR, not even a flat screen TV (except on my laptop).

Thanks retread, My son already decided to spend his money somewhere else. Ah the sacrifices we make for our kids who can't make up thier minds... lol.
Mark who does the same type of music stuff in his church clued my son and I in an what to expect in an earlier post. As I figured, my son thought it would be as easy as it was cool to build his contraption. And to my rescue came all you guys on the board.
Should I change the name of this thread to "Gear-Heads" or something? We can post tech questions to each other.
Thanks again guys

Yes, we have had a few other digression topics in Marriage 101, such as "what non-relationship book are you reading". Probably should keep that sort of thing going over here. I have become acquainted with some new authors, and we all found a lot of books that some of us had enjoyed.
No doubt some of the men would rather be posting about fishing, hunting, motorcycles or airplanes - at least once in a while.

Anyone who wants to post here about the nuts and bolts of nuts and bolts or, How to find the bad wire by letting the smoke out or even how to get off the internet when you get "stuck" on it. Here is the place tp post.
I bet its easier than fixin a marriage cuz we can blame the combobulator and poke the problem with screwdrivers and sticks if you prefer.

Marriages are way more complicated that cars, boats or bass fishin'.
Retread, I have a fishing thread over on the Recreation forum if you haven't seen it. Before getting too into fishing check out the first few posts since it vegan as being about more than just fishing.
It served its main purpose long ago but a few people still talk about fishing there from time to time. My most recent post was about the Bassmaster Classic last weekend.

I might go have a look. This is one of the few threads into which I have ventured, outside of Marriage 101. M101 is more than I can keep up with.
But, like the bank robber in "Dirty Harry", I just got's to know - what's a Chicago boy doing watching the Bassmaster Classic?
Although, I must admit, when I attended Trout Unlimited meetings in downtown Chicago a few years ago, several of the people at my table were wild about bass fishing, and went to Alabama, Louisiana, Florida, and South Carolina in their quest.

The W and I had planned on me showing her around Quicken tonight, but she conked out early...had a glass of wine with her bath and was in bed before 9pm. So I'm cleaning guns instead! We went to the pistol range for the first time in however many years on Saturday and this is the first chance I've had to get them cleaned up...didn't even want to wait this long. I'm using some of my dad's cleaning gear, both out of necessity and as a way of remembering him. Of course, now my hands smell like Hoppe's, which isn't such a bad thing...

If it ever warms up down here I may go to the pistol range. I have my sights on a new, cute pink 9mm, though. My sister bought a new .380 Bersa pistol at a gun show last weekend. She has the cutest little holster she wears under her business suits.

what's a Chicago boy doing watching the Bassmaster Classic? You know, a lot of people think that bass fishing is a Southern sport. This year's winner of the BMC is from Michigan. In the tournament was a guy from New Jersey and a couple from California. So you're one of them TU guys, huh? What's the difference between a bass fisherman and a trout fisherman? A bass fisherman is usually married, to someone named Becky Sue or Cindy Lu. Her hair is blond, no matter what her genes say it should be. They have about 6 kids with names like Roy Gene, Jimmy Mac, Linda Jo or Earl. They fish from a boat that costs twice what their house cost, including the furnishing. They drive F150s, Dodge Rams or Chevy Silverados, use rods that are about as flexible as a shovel handle, reels like winches spooled with 30 pound braided line, use 2/0 or bigger hooks, jigs that weigh a half ounce or more, and a tackle box the size of a Frigidaire. They drink beer...or better yet, Jack Daniels, with a beer back and work down at the mill, go to church on Sunday morning and the high school football game on Friday night. Trout fisherman stand around all day in thigh or hip deep ice cold water waving long wimpy rods back and forth over their heads. They carry all their tackle for the day a a vest pocket and that includes their lunch and their cell phone. Big hooks to them is about a size 16, maybe a 14 if they live out west. Their wives have about half as much hair as the bass fisherman's wife and the color can be anything from red to green, from brown to purple or almost any combination of those you can imagine. They drink white wine or Merlot, drive Audis or Volvos, maybe a Lexus. Their kids don't play football, they play soccer or are in gymnastics. The kids have names like Elizabeth or Albert. They usually only have two of them, probably because they spend all day standing in hip deep ice water. They teach at the high school or local community college, attend "book Club on Friday night, play tennis or golf on Saturday and go to brunch on Sunday morning. BTW, I use fly rods too, usually for bass and panfish, but I have been known to go after trout. A friend of mine owns a trout resort in the Ozarks on the North Fork River an I have fished the Little Lehigh, Mud Run and Hickory Run in PA. I tie my own flies. (You know you're a fly tier when you just spent 75 bucks or more for part of a chicken and still haven't got lunch.)
