We are fortunate, stillhere. Our district does have a zero-tolerance policy. I think bullying will decline, maybe not to nothing, but to less than it is now, as we teach tolerance and awareness.
I was explaining it to someone--when I was a kid, it was totally unacceptable, here in the south, to have an interracial couple out in public. My, how far we've come through education.

I feel for your son... my mom always told me turn the other cheek or ignore them and they will stop. Two years later it hadn't stopped...though I tried not to show it outwardly, I would never wish that intense inner pain on any child. The taunting/bullying didn't until the class bully and I got into a fist-fight. Though the teachers broke it up before someone could "win" she was bruised up and I wasn't. It was years (new school) before someone messed with me again, and going berserker again solved that problem. I didn't really know how to fight, no karate lessons or anything but I was crazy strong from a multitude of chores and I guess the guy involved wasn't expecting me to scrap.

Clever come-backs go a long way toward averting fisticuffs though.
