I'm actually a bit of a fan of Steve Goodman's. Few people know he wrote the song Arlo Guthrie made famous, "City of New Orleans" (which is about the train of that name, not the Louisiana city itself).

I loved his sense of humor. He crafted songscapes. You Never Even Call Me By My Name is "the ultimate country song." Chicken Cordon Blues, Somebody Else's Troubles and Six Hours Ahead of the Sun are all pieces that do not get tiresome. The Dutchman (which he did not write and only recorded) is one of the most poignant songs I've ever heard. He won two Grammy awards.

Goodman died of Leukemia in 1984. He was 36.

Preach the Gospel every day. When necessary, use words.

Wow Fred,

Good to know there's someone else on this forum with musical taste.

Goodman died maybe two weeks before the Cubs clinched the NL East in 1984. He was supposed to do the national anthem before the first playoff game, but Jimmy Buffett did it instead.

He said simply, "You know who's supposed to be here. I'm just filling in." He was wearing dark sunglasses for a reason, I think.

Very poignant.
