I've been married 29 years, two grown children. My wife had a year-long torrid affair with a coworker which I discovered a year ago and we have been trying to work through the damage. She has done everything necessary to repent (quit job, asked for forgiveness, etc.). We love each other, but now I'm wondering if I should get out. Twenty-five years ago she had a brief (one-month) affair and at that time I found out that during our engagement she had slept with two guys, one of whom was in our wedding party. I've always hated divorce so keeping my marriage intact has been important to me. I think I could be happy with her in the future, but I wonder if I'm being a fool because I'm worshiping the concept of marriage. BTW she denies any other infidelities.

She denies the prior infidelities?
How do you know she is lying?

This is what I would recommend.
Totally MB, by the way.

RADICAL HONESTY
on your part

Tell her you are thinking about ending the M.
Tell her your reasons/fears.
All of it.
All cards on the table.

Also, tell her you KNOW she is lying about the prior infidelities ( if you know 100% you have your facts right.

Welcome to Marriage Builders, sorry you are here.

The problem is that your wife has very poor boundaries. She probably has opposite sex friendships and is in the habit of telling them personal details about her life.

Your marriage can recover if you both work to affair proof your marriage and commit to a program of recovery. Has she opened up her life to you so that it would be impossible to carry on a secret second life? That would be a good start.

I would sugggest starting off with the book Surviving an Affair and follow the program to recovery in there.

Here is a basic outline of what it will take to recover your marriage:

Originally Posted by Requirements for Recovery
The plan I recommend for recovery after an affair is very specific. That's because I've found that even small deviations from that plan are usually disastrous. But when it's followed, it always works. The plan has two parts that must be implemented sequentially. The first part of the plan is for the unfaithful spouse to completely separate from the lover and eliminate the conditions that made the affair possible. The second part is for the couple to create a romantic relationship, using my Basic Concepts as a guide.

I'll describe these two parts to you in a little more detail.

The first step, complete separation from the lover and eliminating the conditions that made the affair possible, requires a complete understanding of the affair. All information regarding the affair must be revealed to the betrayed spouse, including the name of the lover, the conditions that made the affair possible (travel, internet, etc.), the details of what took place during the affair, all correspondence, and anything else that would shed light on the tragedy.

This information is important for two reasons: (1) it creates accountability and transparency, making it essentially impossible for the unfaithful spouse to continue the affair or begin a new one unnoticed, and (2) it creates trust for the betrayed spouse, providing evidence that the affair is over and a new one is unlikely to take its place. The nightmares you experience are likely to continue until you have the facts that
will lead to your assurance that your husband can be trusted.

An analysis of the betrayed spouse's childhood or emotional state of mind in an effort to discover why he or she would have an affair is distracting and unnecessary. It takes precious time away from finding the real solutions. I know why people have affairs: We are all wired for it. Given certain conditions, we would all do it. Given other conditions, however, none of us would do it. So the goal of the first step is to discover the conditions that made the affair possible and eliminate them.

After the first step is completed, the second step is to create a romantic relationship between you and your husband using my 10 Basic Concepts here
as your guide. While your relationship may be improving, it won't lead to a romantic relationship because you are not being transparent toward each other. Unspoken issues in a marital relationship lead to a superficiality that ruins romance.

p.s. oldste, if you are really serious about turning this around, I would sign up for the online course with Marriage Builders. It is worth every penny. They assign you a coach who walks you through weekly lessons. You also have daily access to Dr Harley over on the weekend forum.

The GOAL is to affair proof your marriage and create romantic love. This program really does work because it is behaviorally based, rather than feeling based.

Many of us have been through this program and have had GREAT results.

Program #3: Marriage Builders Online Program here

As motivating as the Marriage Builders Home Study Courses are to some couples, there are others who never open the boxes after they arrive. Or they only complete a few lessons before they become distracted and stop trying to solve their marital problems. And in most of these cases, it's only one spouse that is unmotivated -- he or she does not see the importance or urgency. I call that poorly motivated spouse the "reluctant" spouse, and I have spent most of my career as a marriage counselor working with that person to get on board.

When both spouses are motivated to solve the problems in their marriage, they are usually able to complete the courses with ease and don't need additional help. But for the rest of those who can't seem to find time to do the lessons, we have yet another level of motivation: The Marriage Builders Online Program which combines the Marriage Builders Seminar and Marriage Builders Accountability Program into a single and highly effective program of marital recovery. I will describe each of the two components of the program separately.

Program #3A: Marriage Builders Seminar.

One of the biggest motivational problems that some spouses face as they go through the lessons of His Needs, Her Needs and Love Busters is that they don't have the big picture. They don't grasp how each part of the program fits all the other parts. If one spouse doesn't understand how each lesson of these courses helps create a great marriage, how can he or she be motivated to complete the assignments? Where there's poor vision, there's often poor motivation.

So I've provided a way for you to have my entire program of marital recovery explained by me! I do that in the Marriage Builders Seminar where I take you through every one of my Basic Concepts. I try to give you my vision of why they're so important in marriage. And I also provide special encouragement to spouses who are reluctant to do much to improve their marriage. It enables both spouses to form the same vision and understanding of where their marriage should be headed, and gives them added motivation to accomplish it.

But the Marriage Builders Seminar does more than just give you the facts. It also helps you organize the problems you face so that you can solve each of them in a systematic way. By the time the seminar is over, you will have completed numerous questionnaires that are designed to help define your marital goals. The accountability program that is described next will help you achieve those goals.

Program #3B: The Marriage Builders Accountability Program.

I've found that those who experience a marriage enrichment seminar without solving the problems that were uncovered are at a greater risk for divorce than those who do not attend at all. So to avoid that tragic outcome, we insist that every couple that attends the Marriage Builders Seminar solves the problems that they identify by completing the home study course lessons that that address those problems, and we hold them accountable.

The Marriage Builders Accountability Program is designed to keep you motivated to complete the home study courses in the following ways:

1. You are assigned an accountability coach who will guide you through the lessons in the home study courses that address your marital goals.

2. Each week we will send by e-mail a survey to document your progress in solving your marital problems.

3. If your survey indicates that you are having problems with any of the lessons, your accountability coach will contact you by telephone to help you overcome those problems.

4. If you have questions or if you need encouragement, you may e-mail or talk to your accountability coach by telephone.

5. Each month, we will evaluate the progress you are making in depositing love units and avoiding their withdrawal by having you complete our Love Bank Inventory. The results will be kept in your permanent file to be revealed to you when the course is completed.

6. If you have a question for me (Dr. Harley) regarding a particular lesson, you may post it on a private section of the Marriage Builders Forum. I am usually able to respond in about a day. But before you do, read some of the questions that others have posted for that lesson. I may have already answered it.

Programs #3A and #3B -- the Marriage Builders Seminar and Accountability Program are not available separately. They must be purchased together in the registration fee for the Marriage Builders Online Program.

How to Register for Marriage Builders Online Program

In the past, I presented the Marriage Builders Seminar in person in what I called a Marriage Builders Weekend. But now it is available only online in the comfort of your own home. That's why I now call it the Marriage BuildersOnline Program. The cost of the online seminar and the accountability program is only $995.

If you purchase the Marriage Builders Home Study Courses, and then decide that you need the Marriage Builders Seminar and Accountability Program to get through the lessons, the price you paid for the courses will be deducted from your Marriage Builders Weekend registration fee.

If you feel that you should have a complete overview of my program delivered by me online, and then you should be held accountable to complete the courses that will help you solve all of your marital problems, register for the Marriage Builders Weekend by calling toll-free 1-888-639-1639 (8:00 am to 12:00 noon CT M-F), or Register Online through our secure registration page.

Time for a lie-detector test IMO. Infidelity seems to be part of your WW's character. Dishonesty as well, considering that she was able to keep an A hidden from her H of 29 years.

Melody's provided you good advice. My advice to you would be that "hating divorce" is a pretty poor reason to remain M'd to an unsuitable partner.

I guess it depends on how you discovered each of these affairs. Was it because she came and confessed to you or did you accidentally discover them? If it was the latter, I'm afraid you may be in for more bad news and my guess would be that this kind of thing has been going on all along. The poster who suggested a polygraph is spot on-- if you really care about finding out the whole truth at this point.
