a few months ago my wife discovered an affair I was having..she is absolutely crushed..i have betrayed her love and trust. I have never been so sorry for something in my entire life.. We talked about separation and had a plan to do so..but by the grace of God she wanted me to stay..since then we have been workin hard on our marriage. Working on putting God first. She and I have opened up a line of communication that's been down for a long time..some days are hard but I asked God to give me (and her) the strength to be the husband and wife were supposed to be..i love my wife and family dearly.my selfishness and lies almost cost me all of that.. God thank you for another chance..

So what happened and what have you done to recover your marriage? What steps have been taken thus far?

Have you read any of DrH's books? Have you given any thought to the online course? Is your BW interested in posting on here as well? We could help her.

thanks for asking melodylane..i had an affair that lasted for 10 months..long story short things made there way down the grapevine and then next thing I know I'm sitting face to face with my wife admitting an affair. As far as steps..ive started counseling..i go to 2 'SA' groups per week (that is HUGE issue). My wife and I have been reading together almost every night (love busters, surviving affair, his needs her needs etc...) all great books..we already started implementing some things. We also are working our communication skill, also trying to recognize filling our 'emotional needs'. I also lead us in prayer alot..What's ur thoughts ?

Did you end all contact with the OW? [I mean ALL] If she is married, has her husband been told?

The way to recover your marriage is outlined in Surviving an Affair. Dr Harley describes it here:

Quote
The plan I recommend for recovery after an affair is very specific. That's because I've found that even small deviations from that plan are usually disastrous. But when it's followed, it always works. The plan has two parts that must be implemented sequentially. The first part of the plan is for the unfaithful spouse to completely separate from the lover and eliminate the conditions that made the affair possible. The second part is for the couple to create a romantic relationship, using my Basic Concepts as a guide.

I'll describe these two parts to you in a little more detail.

The first step, complete separation from the lover and eliminating the conditions that made the affair possible, requires a complete understanding of the affair. All information regarding the affair must be revealed to the betrayed spouse, including the name of the lover, the conditions that made the affair possible (travel, internet, etc.), the details of what took place during the affair, all correspondence, and anything else that would shed light on the tragedy.

This information is important for two reasons: (1) it creates accountability and transparency, making it essentially impossible for the unfaithful spouse to continue the affair or begin a new one unnoticed, and (2) it creates trust for the betrayed spouse, providing evidence that the affair is over and a new one is unlikely to take its place. The nightmares you experience are likely to continue until you have the facts that
will lead to your assurance that your husband can be trusted.

An analysis of the betrayed spouse's childhood or emotional state of mind in an effort to discover why he or she would have an affair is distracting and unnecessary. It takes precious time away from finding the real solutions. I know why people have affairs: We are all wired for it. Given certain conditions, we would all do it. Given other conditions, however, none of us would do it. So the goal of the first step is to discover the conditions that made the affair possible and eliminate them.

After the first step is completed, the second step is to create a romantic relationship between you and your husband using my 10 Basic Concepts http://marriagebuilders.com/ca/to.cgi?l=qa080103bc
as your guide. While your relationship may be improving, it won't lead to a romantic relationship because you are not being transparent toward each other. Unspoken issues in a marital relationship lead to a superficiality that ruins romance.

A little more background, please, only. Who was the OW? A co-worker? Family friend? Did your BW know her? Is OW married?

I am a FWW, and these are some things that helped us. Most of it is somewhere in the things melodylane linked, so be sure to read all of that.

1. Be completely honest about everything. Leave no question unanswered.
2. Take full responsibility for the A. No matter the state of your marriage, the affair is 100% YOUR responsibility
3. Make sure she has every password, every cell phone info, etc. There is no such thing as snooping - it is all acceptable and necessary for her to verify and see that she can begin to trust you. Your life is an open book. And at least for now, social networking type sites should be out.
4. I am not how far exposure extends once an affair has been admitted, but do not keep this to just the two of you. People close to you need to know so that they can support you AND help keep you accountable
5. No Contact is non-negotiable. No emails, no phone calls, no face to face, no letters, no mutual friend updates, and NO internet searches for her. She is dead to you
6. If you work with this woman....find another job.
7. make a list of extraordinary precautions to eliminate what made the affair possible. Your wife needs to be satisfied with the list.
8. Know what her top EN's are and meet them
9. Be HUMBLE. Humility is a greatly undervalued trait these days.
10. Your W is grieving a horrible loss. There is no set time table on grief, and it goes in cycles and stages. Be patient and supportive. You cannot try to "speed up" the process...it takes as long as it takes. It is a marathon, not a sprint

It has been a little over four years since our D-Day, and though no one ever forgets, it has faded into the tapestry of our past. So there can be restoration.
