I had my first alcohol tonight, a "Rum Runner" (I think) at Ruby Tuesday's. Delicious stuff, but way too rich. What are some good drinks for beginners that are fruity to the point they cover up the alcohol taste?

I only ended up drinking about a shot's worth of the stuff, so I'm figuring I should be having smaller drinks.

Hmmm... My favorites are Margaritas and Daiquiris. But watch out for those Margaritas if tequila does to you what it does to me. Ever heard of the country song "Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off"? I'm just saying.

Writer mentioned margaritas which have tequilla in it. Tequilla in any quantity makes me very very ill...the very smell makes me resemble a stomach virus.

Do you like rootbeer? Try a shot of jagermeister, a shoot of rootbeer shnaaps, and the rest of the TALL glass filled with ice and root beer

If you like something really fruity, try a hurricane. Strawberry margaritas and daquiris tend to be a favorite amongst women.

And never discount telling the waitress/bartender that you want something fruity that will mask the flavor of liquor.

I always thought I should be wary, because it "runs in the family" so to speak. Even with the shot's worth of it I had, I was weaving a bit in step and felt...oddly happy.

I suppose that was to be expected, it had about three kinds of rum in it...

Maybe try Sangria... My SILs both really like it, it is too sweet for me.

I was going to say Sangria. It was the first thing I ever drank, and it was not all "alocoholy tasting." I also like margaritas - the frozen ones taste better to me.

Also a mimosa is good - champagne and orange juice.

Stay away from Schnapps....it is evil. Unless you have a really sore throat and need to sing.

This is SO not my subject, so please feel free to disregard my comments, but I am wondering: If you want to drink alcohol, why do you want to avoid tasting it?

Schnapps, Cognac, Single-malt scotch -- even wine and beer -- are meant to be drunk "neat."

A pellet gun is a good start. How old is she? My son started on a pellet gun and we put him through the Eddie Eagle program in NRA. He learned alot in that. At age 28, he is very proficient with guns and owns a regular arsenal.

This cracks me up enormously, karma!! What a contrast to me at 21. At age 21 I was not asking about "beginner" drinks but saying things like "but officer, I am a great drunk driver!!"

I really like Mike's hard raspberry limeade for something occasional to have at home. Beer....that is the nastiest foulness ever to rise from the earth.

Mel, DD is 14. She loves going to papaw's and shooting his guns at all the elaborate targets he has. She shot 9 cans out of 10 Christmas Day with her new gun.

The only problem is...what am I going to do with these tiaras, white gloves, and my Oklahoma and Phantom of the Opera accompaniment tracks????? Who will carry on the tradition of twirls, sequins, Vaselined teeth and world peace?????

KarmaRose - I had my first and only drink by accident when I was in the 4th grade - I picked up my dad's "ice water" by mistake. EverClear has a particularly nasty taste.

I'm now more than twice your age and have never had a drop of alcohol beyond what's contained in vanilla extract. Here's why - I saw two siblings and my father destroyed by alcohol. No desire to go there.

I played in bars with my band or as a solo pianist/singer while I was in college. The bartender always gave me orange juice straight, even when the patrons were buying/asking them to give me a "real" drink.

If you don't like the taste, you don't have to have it. There's enough people out there who are designated drivers and such that ordering a virgin drink doesn't get raised eyebrows anymore. My personal favorite is sprite with lime and a shot of vanilla. No Alcohol. I can live without "the effect" in my life.

That is why I plan to keep it to a small drink now and then. Alcoholism runs in my family as well.

And the fact that you lump all barley and hop creations into one group tells me that you prob think soy is a good substitute for steak...yep, one of THOSE kind of people.
