OK, I began a diet. It's called medi weight loss.....but it's basically doctor supervised Atkins. I'm in day 3, and all I can eat this first week is protein. I'm really surprised I am not hungry or tired. I even got a cute little bottle of keto-sticks. They made me think of you. Just a heads up, because when I lose these 47 pounds, I am going to get out my hot rollers and challenge you to a southern belle contest.

Good luck on your diet! I kept my weight off for 11 years on that diet and did very well. I have put some weight back on in the last year from my thyroid but I still eat Atkins style.

I thought it would be torture....but honestly it's hard to eat as much as they want me to because the protein makes me feel so much fuller than the crap did.

Good ol' Dr. Oz said something simple yet profound: "Our bodies are asking for nutrients, and we are giving them calories." I mean, the calories sure do taste good, but I suppose it's hard to argue with nutrients. Yay for your good start, Tawanda!

I went from 1200 calories a day on a starvation diet to 1800-2000 calories on Atkins and lost 40 pounds in 1999. And I wasn't hungry and obsessed with food.

The first week is uber strict. I must eat at least 800 calories of protein, but protein is all I eat. I was writing down what and how much I ate, not bothering calculating calories because I was just sure I was meeting enough....nope. The past two days I have only reached 600, so I have to eat MORE....ugh.
I have also realized just how much I was eating not out of hunger, but out of....boredom? How sad. This morning I woke up without an alarm, and I went straight to the kitchen to wash a couple of dishes that got used after I went to bed, and then I started laundry. DH was a mix of puzzled and pleased. I usually veg around until after I take the kids to school.

T,
What have you read about Atkins and Bi-Polar???
I just wonder if such a regimented diet (especially at first) will start obsessive thoughts which could lead to a manic cycle.
Then again, change of diet/loss of weight could result in you needing less meds...in the long run which is a good thing.
I really don't need you to answer that for me...I'm just reminding you because I have some understanding and experience with manic depression.
Just diligently monitor yourself and trust what your loved ones are telling you so you can stop/treat a cycle before it's untreatable.

.but it's basically doctor supervised Atkins. Mr W is correct. Talk to your psychiatrist and let him/her know that you are going to be in a deliberate ketosis state (diet) and ask if ketosis is risky considering the medications you take.A regular physician may not know the answer to this! Get a green light from your psychiatrist.

OK, thank you. I talked with the doctor about it, but like you said, a specialist will know best. It's all about chemistry. Your illness ~~~> chemistry. Your medication ~~~> chemistry. Keep that in mind when you meddle with your body chemistry for more than a few days at a time ~~~> it may effect the other chemical balance you've worked so hard to achieve. I'm gonna be mad if the pdoc says no. I done paid 250.00!

Yay! I can continue. Of course, he said all the doctor "be aware of your moods, don't mess with your meds, call me if something is weird" stuff. His only concern was whether or not the supplement has any diuretic properties, which might elevate lithium levels. But I am drinking plenty of electrolytes. And I'll know if the lithium level gets to high.....because I'll start throwing up. BTDT.
Actually, he said that getting to a healthy weight and especially exercising would probably help with mood stability.

I am glad you did that, Tawanda! I was reading in the book "Why We Get Fat" by Gary Taubes that when you lose weight on low carb that you need to see your doctor about changing your medications if you are on blood pressure meds or insulin meds. Reason is because high blood pressure comes down and the need for insulin goes down on low carb.

What is the supplement they give you?

It's called vita super - it's part of their program. I am also taking calcium and omega 3 (which really stinks). I am also blessed in that DH is very astute when it comes to my moods. In fact, I'll be a bit off, and he'll say "Are you depressed?" I'll wave it off and say I am just tired.....then a week or so later when I cry over some dumb thing or say "I am such a failure....I'll never be good enough" He'll say, "I knew you were getting depressed. You need to call the doctor." He is very intuitive not only about what to say to me but HOW to say it.

..Just a heads up, because when I lose these 47 pounds, I am going to get out my hot rollers and challenge you to a southern belle contest. You guys kill me with this. TB, I am happy for you, after I butted heads with Mel and KT about Atkins, I just have to bow to thier obvious superior knowledge about diet(s) which I still need to get on BTW, but lack the discipline. I am going to look into the diabetic version of nutrisystem. From what I understand it is packaged and planned and I won't have to break out the scale and beakers to monitor my intake and plan the meals. It will just be the simplest way to get my diabetes under control right now, later I hope to get back into cooking and afford and grow fresh foods, and I will look into Atkins also, there has to be a way to employ the principles as a diabetic. My son says he knows a naturalist doctor who does bloodwork also, and gonna use him too. Grats on your diet success.

The magic is in the metabolism, or as PB mentioned, the chemistry.
Fats and protiens take longer for your body to digest and absorb, so their presence in your small intestine causes your body to shut down your hunger.
"Hey, hold back on that stuff, we're busy working down here!"
We've had this high-carb, american heartland diet shoved down our throats for so long, that we just can't imagine that the very things that allowed us to grow these big 'ol brains of ours can possibly be healthy - fat, and protien.
Add to that that most recent studies show that dietary cholestrol doesn't affect blood cholestrol as much as previously thought... and, zing! We start getting some truth!

The best diet EVER for a diabetic is a more stringent version of Atkins developed by Dr Richard Bernstein, a doctor and a diabetic. He has the best track record of achieving normal blood sugar levels. The diabetics on the low carb forums swear by this guy! They lose mega weight and improve their blood sugar levels. Most are able to reduce their insulin intake. Good luck! Dr Bernstein's Diabetes Solution
