An XBF of mine that has been trying to get me back off and on for years, sent me a valentine e-greeting but had a note in it to another woman.

How would you handle this? I hope I did the right thing. I sent a reply and said I got it by mistake, I think he meant to send it to Jeannie's email address, and signed my name.

It wasn't a love note or anything, it was to his friend Jeannie that I've known about for years. I hope it doesn't embarrass him too much, but I wanted him to be able to rectify his mistake so he can resend it to her, that was his intent. Did I do the wrong thing? Should I have just ignored it? I wasn't sure what to do.

My first reaction was to say you should have ignored it. But on reflection, I think you probably did the right thing. As long as your response to him was sarcastic or spiteful, it probably sent the right message:

I see you're not completely interested in me, and I am not interested in you (e.g.: BUSTED!)

No I didn't think sarcasm was called for, it was just a regretful error. People do need to be more careful before they push "send"! naughty

Sorry, I meant to say, "As long as your response to him was NOT sarcastic or spiteful."

How one little word can change the meaning of a message.

My bad. Sorry.

IMO, you did just the right thing. The guy made a mistake and he could have ended up very confused when/if he asked the intended recipient about it.

He ought to be grateful. If he's not, don't stress over it.

He ended up sending me one afterwards and I told him he didn't have to do that and he responded he didn't do anything he didn't want to...and invited me to lunch!
