I saw this movie as a whole for the first time a few days ago. Aside from the masterful performance by Colin Firth as the prince/king and Geoffrey Rush as the doctor (you'll giggle at the scene when the prince swears like a sailor)...it brought something else to mind.

The destruction that "Bertie's" brother brings on himself and the selfishness with which he acts.

Throughout the movie he acts like a cad. When Bertie is trying to tell his brother that he should act in a manner befitting a future king, his brother replies snidely, and even mocks his stutter. ("B-B-B-B-Bertie?")

It's a wonderful movie to show how both how selfish the wayward gets, and what you can lose when you get into an affair. Throughout the movie, MANY people--the prince's father, Bertie, and several nobles...speak out against it.

Bertie's elder brother apparently had some workers fired so he could buy this woman jewelry, was holding "American" parties (you could tell what an affront this was to the gentle-bred royals, Bertie's wife seemed shocked), and was even having trees cut down because the woman wanted it that way.

And as you all know, the brother lost the crown.

Though the consequences do not seem to matter to him; it shows something more: that people WILL talk about you behind your back if you do as he did. There is one scene where the King (Bertie's father) is ranting and raving to Bertie about how he was lied to by the elder brother, and numerous people are seen during the movie gossiping about the affair.

One year becomes two, two years becomes five, five becomes ten and before you know it, you've wasted your whole life on a problem you can't solve. That's one way to spend your life. -rwinger

I will not spend my life this way.

I've got my low-brow; The Walking Dead on AMC.

Themes of adultery in the Zombie apocalypse? Eeeek!

Though... hmmmm....

They "thought" her husband was dead...

Anyway, the weight of it has lifted since; she confessed, and he admitted he had known all along.

Zombies man...

I haven't seen it yet. I'll put it on my list of must sees.

I went to the theatre to see Descendants when it opened last week.
Another good one about infidelity and how the waywards are not so wonderful and most people realize it (even dysfunctional, enabling friends of theirs who try to justify the affair for their buddy).
