I purchased a very pretty elegant but simply designed dining set with four chairs from Ethan Allen. On the other hand, my parents love IKEA for their furniture needs these days.

We used to own a large-framed German oak dining set with 6 upholstered chairs. Great, except our home ended up being in CA and we don't have enough space for a large dining set. Plus, upholstery doesn't go too well with grandchildren. It was a nice change to get rid of the massive oak set and get something that fits better in our home and with the children (no upholstery!)

...and yes, this is the right forum for this sort of post.

I have a really nice set that I bought at a national retailer known for not-so-great furniture (initials RTG). I bought a leafed table with six chairs and a lighted china cabinet, and they have held up wonderfully, even with daily use and my largish family. My seats are upholstered (the rest of the chair is wood), but they are easy to reupholster myself (and I have; they were WHITE to begin with. Now they are more food-colored, with reds, greens, and gold fabric that I bought for $1/yd at Wal-Mart).

The best way to find your right set is to first size it to the room, and judge quality by touching it in person--wiggle chairs, sit in them, push on the table, look at how it is put together. The sofa I bought from these people has long since been donated (the frame was pretty much crap), but the dining set is rock-solid and I expect to have it for many, many years.

I had to laugh at this. Our kitchen set is a table that is at least 40 years old, 4 folding chairs from Costco and a high chair. Two of the chairs were beige once smile We're putting off getting a kitchen set until the kids are bigger and don't make such a mess when they eat.

We got a sectional at RTG about 9 years ago that is holding up okay, but the couch part is starting to sag in the middle. We have gotten a bunch of cabinets and bookcases from IKEA and have been really satisfied with them.

We have pieces from IKEA that are holding up well 3+ years out from purchase. I expect to send them out with my 15yo when he leaves home in a few years, as they are his bed and dresser.

We bought new living room furniture from macy's, and it is outstanding. We visited lots of showrooms looking for sofas and chairs, and found ones that fit our room (rule #1!) and were well-made and sturdy.

I did refinish our occasional tables, which were originally purchased unfinished and unassembled at Lowe's, to match the stain of the new furniture.
