I just found out that my wife has been having an affair with a man she works with. She has been totally honest after I got the story, quit her job, and even changed her phone number. I'm just having trouble getting past the fact that she is still in love with another guy. She told me she loves me but is not in love with me. She wants to try to make it work because of the kids. I'm just not sure if I want to stick around to find out if she "falls back in love with me." On top of that she doesn't really want me doing anything romantic for her, so its not like I can be proactive. She said she needs time to work on herself. Any pointers about surviving this horrid ordeal would be greatly appreciated.

First read this
http://www.marriagebuilders.com/graphic/mbi3200_love.html

then after that, this
http://www.marriagebuilders.com/graphic/mbi3300_needs.html

after both of those, this will be helpful too
http://forum.marriagebuilders.com/ubbt/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1659680#Post1659680

then you will have a good idea of what happened in your marriage and where to take it now.

Please keep coming back to post to ask questions and get more input on how you proceed.

Have you read Surviving An Affair?

The first thing you need to do is realize that you probably don't know the truth and she hasn't been totally honest with you.

She has said/done multiple things to suggest that she is still active in her affair. Time to get reading because I can guarantee you do not have the whole story yet.

You CAN be proactive in this, but it will involve doing things that will piss her off to no end. You cannot restore your romantic love while she continues fantasy land ("work on herself")

Derek, this can be completely turned around if you follow this program. Your wife can fall in love with you again if you have a PLAN. But not having a plan is a plan to fail. Most marriages do not ever recover from affairs. They stay together and limp along in a crippled state for years until the next affair happens. You don't have to be like that.

Check out this article by Dr Harley:

But when it's followed, it always works. The plan has two parts that must be implemented sequentially. The first part of the plan is for the unfaithful spouse to completely separate from the lover and eliminate the conditions that made the affair possible. The second part is for the couple to create a romantic relationship, using my Basic Concepts as a guide.

I'll describe these two parts to you in a little more detail.

The first step, complete separation from the lover and eliminating the conditions that made the affair possible, requires a complete understanding of the affair. All information regarding the affair must be revealed to the betrayed spouse, including the name of the lover, the conditions that made the affair possible (travel, internet, etc.), the details of what took place during the affair, all correspondence, and anything else that would shed light on the tragedy.

This information is important for two reasons: (1) it creates accountability and transparency, making it essentially impossible for the unfaithful spouse to continue the affair or begin a new one unnoticed, and (2) it creates trust for the betrayed spouse, providing evidence that the affair is over and a new one is unlikely to take its place. The nightmares you experience are likely to continue until you have the facts that
will lead to your assurance that your husband can be trusted.

An analysis of the wayward spouse's childhood or emotional state of mind in an effort to discover why he or she would have an affair is distracting and unnecessary. It takes precious time away from finding the real solutions. I know why people have affairs: We are all wired for it. Given certain conditions, we would all do it. Given other conditions, however, none of us would do it. So the goal of the first step is to discover the conditions that made the affair possible and eliminate them.

After the first step is completed, the second step is to create a romantic relationship between you and your husband using my 10 Basic Concepts here
as your guide. While your relationship may be improving, it won't lead to a romantic relationship because you are not being transparent toward each other. Unspoken issues in a marital relationship lead to a superficiality that ruins romance.

Is her affair partner married, and if so, have you exposed the affair to his wife?

Right away, secretly put a GPS on her vehicle.
Put a VAR in her vehicle.
Put spyware on her computer & phone.
Do a financial forensic search.

Do NOT tell WW about this site.
It's way too premature to trust WW with this site.

There are some important questions that we need answered before we can help you.

How old are you? How old is your WS(wayward spouse)?

Do you have any children? How old are they?

How long have you been married? Is this the first marriage for both of you?

How did your WS meet their AP?

How long did the A last?

How did you find out about the A?

Have you ordered the book Surviving an Affair by Dr Harley? Have you read it?

Her behaviour contains a number of red flags, so you should snoop to ensure the A is indeed over. However her decision to quit her job is promising.

How old are you both?

Numbers/ages of kids?

How long married?

Who is the OM? Is he married?

Who has the A been exposed to?

Welcome to MB!

Yes do this immediately.

You cannot trust your wife until her behaviour is trustworthy.

Saying 'I am only here for the kids' is very worrying indeed.

I'm 27 she is 24. We have two kids ages 6 and 3. She met the guy at work( they worked together). I made her change her phone and give me all passwords to any online accounts she has. She deleted her facebook, though I regularly check it, and I am constantly monitoring her phone record (which she just changed yesterday). Initially she wanted a divorce. The last year has been a really rough one, in which we had to spend 7 months living with my parents. We finally have our own place now. I have control of all capital in the home, and monitor the account like a hawk. She has also swore to stay at home full time to take care of our 3 year old son. I don't trust her, but I also know that I'm better than her, and if I so choose could find a new partner without much effort(not to toot my own horn). I am a college educated professional (a science teacher), while she only has her GED, and is completely (now that she quit her job) dependent upon me financially. I know that I could and probably should just walk away from this mess and find an honest woman to make me happy again, but she truly does have my heart, and I really do want to at least try to work it out, and maybe come back a stronger couple than when we started. I'm a hopeless romantic and I do tend to go a bit overboard. Her exact words were that I was being a bit over the top and that sometimes she felt smothered by that. I'm going to pull back for a while and try to work on myself. If she does it again she is out for good, and I'll raise our children by myself. I just really want things to work between us without becoming blind to any lies she might still be covering up. I also want to the emotional pain to stop, any pointers on how to get rid of that sickening feeling in your gut. Thanks for dropping in.

Are you legally married? How long?

Who is this guy? I know he's a coworker, but is he married? Who is he exactly?

Who knows about this A so far?

These are all important questions.

Its the worst pain you will ever endure but there are things you can do.

Exposure is not only vital for killing her fantasy of the OM, but it will also provide you with vital support. You need everyone pitching in to help with this.

The more Just Compensation your wife pays you,the better you will feel. She is doing a terrible job at healing you at the moment and manipulating you into 'backing off' but again, exposure could help motivate her here after the secret fantasy is revealed to all, including her, as simply a dumb idea.

If you really need it consider asking your doctor for help. Don't be a hero.

The top three jobs for any BS - betrayed spouse - are

1) Get enough sleep
2) Eat something
3) Reach out. Not just to your RL friends and families, but to us. Remember there is usually someone up if you need to vent.

There is no 'over the top' in being romantic if the person doing it has a large balance in your 'love bank'.

You also can not spend too much time together if you are 'in love'.

Your wife complains of these things in order to
1. justify her affair
and
2. if done before the affair, to point out that at least one of her most important emotional needs was not being met the way she wanted. It is a guide to figuring out where to strengthen a marriage vs something not fixable.

While her affair is still active (and it most likely is) she will fight you on meeting her needs and on falling more in love with you. The affair must be for sure ended, not just superficially or in your view.

Aim for no love busting http://www.marriagebuilders.com/graphic/mbi3400_lovebust.html
and the affair truly being completely over and then fill that account by meeting her most important emotional needs.

You have lots and lots of reading/studying to do.

Has the affair been exposed?

Have you read His Needs, Her Needs?
At your stage, you really need to read Surviving an Affair by Dr. Harley (available at bookstore, amazon or this website)

What your wife is doing is morally wrong; however, Dr. Harley teaches that we are all susceptible to an affair. They are caused by not having our emotional needs met and a lack of boundaries around the opposite sex.

This affair, if left on its own, will emotionally kill YOU long before it dies.

WWs have a remarkable ability to lock away the memories and romantic imaginings of their OMs for incredibly long periods of time. She might not actively be in contact TODAY, but unless you put the stake through her "romantic heart" she will not really be in contact with YOU either. Quiescence in a WW's affair is NOT termination.

You're going to have to expose, to her contacts, his, and her former workplace. Additionally, you should schedule a polygraph for her, and STD screenings for both of you.

Strap on the armor, my friend, and get ready to fight for your marriage.
