I have been with my wife for 15 years married 12 with 3 boys. I thought our marriage was good, with no problems. After an insident while in Iraq the last time, someone hacked my account and email an Air Force girl to try to sleep wiht her. Then I cheated on my wife before this deployment. This is my only indiscrestion ever! Now that I am on my 5th deployment, my wife found out about affair. She wanted a divorce and started to see another man. After a few months, she wanted to come and work on our marriage. I had a feeling she didn a few days before she wanted to talk. I confirmed this with anothers soldiers wife, that she talks too. That was on Wednesday, then on Saturday she said she wanted to talk after I sypked with my boys. I knew we were going to work it out! Then after making me a happy man, she broke the news that she was pregnant by this guy. How do I fix and come back to my marriage with a full heart, and not look at this child with resentment? I mean I have had a visectomy, so I can't have kids. Now there is a 4th one in the picture!?

Wow, what a mess! please read this and tell me what you think. More later... I am revising SAA and it should be in print sometime in 2011, and the problem you raise will be included in it. But it's particularly difficult to address because of our no-contact-with-the-ex-lover rule on the one hand, and the need of a child to have contact with their natural parents on the other. Our radio archives have more on this subject than anything I've written so far, because we've had several listeners call in with this problem, and I describe the approach I take.
As you probably already know by now, I tilt toward keeping the marriage healthy at the possible expense of the child not having adequate contact with the OM. I recommend that at the time of birth, the other man not be mentioned on the birth certificate unless he demands it. That makes your husband the legal parent of the child. If he does demand being on the birth certificate, I recommend that he pay child support until the child is 19. If the OM wants visitation, I recommend that it be done with transparency, so his own family knows what's going on. A mediator, paid by him, is to pick up and deliver the child so that you and your husband never have to have any contact with him.
In almost all cases that I've witnessed, the OM isn't willing to be named on the birth certificate, pay the child support, or make the situation known to his family. Under those conditions, I highly suggest that he not be able to visit his child until he or she is an adult. If an attempt is made, I suggest getting a restraining order. While that policy seems very rigid and uncaring toward the child, the alternatives are usually disastrous. Having an old lover around, the cause of your husband's greatest sadness, has such an devastating effect on the marriage that few survive.
Having heard from some of the couples who have followed this way of thinking, and others who have done the opposite, I am confident that it is the best approach to your situation.
Best wishes, Willard F. Harley, Jr.

Hey 28, what's up? Did you read the quote from Dr. Harley above? Have you had a chance to familiarize yourself with this site? May I direct you to the pregnancy/OC section of this forum? What has transpired?
I was wondering if the OM knows about his POTENTIAL paternal involvement. If it's not too late please let me advise not to inform him at this juncture.
Hoping you come back soon.

If the other guy doesn't know then don't tell him, until you get a plan together. If he already knows, perhaps he would be willing to put the child up for adoption. Your wife may want to keep the child, but it may not be the best option since this child deserves a chance at a drama free life, and there are a lot of good folks that can't have children that would love to provide a good home.

You would think that If a married woman was having an affair she would have enough sense to use a condom. Unless she wanted to get pregnant.

Best wishes, Willard F. Harley, Jr. The only problem is that this is a proposal. The father can ask a court to order a DNA test and the County Court determines te custody/ visitation etc. the mother doesn't always have the right to make these rules. Who is the affair partner? Do you know him? Have you followed Surviving an Affair recovery program? Is there contact with the affair partner? Will he just walk away? I am really sorry. I had a friend who served in Vietnam and he said he came back home from his tour and his wife was 3 months pregnant. The problem is that you cannot have a loving, romantic relationship with your wife while in the military. You both need to maintain high boundaries until you retire. High boundaries means NO opposite sex friendships. And really NO talking about personal stuff with the opposite sex. If you haven't done so read Surviving An Affair.

You would think that If a married woman was having an affair she would have enough sense to use a condom. Unless she wanted to get pregnant. I would say the same about a married man. The thing is... married people having affairs do not have sense. They are selfishly acting on emotion and addiction. Sorry for the TJ, but I don't think "enough sense" regarding pregnancy should have anything to do with gender. And using a condom helps prevent STI's, not just pregnancy.

Thanks all for the the support. I know for a fact there is no need for a DNA test. In fact I am her husband for the last 12 years and we have 3 boys together, and have been in Afghanistan since March. She just found out last week that she was pregnant. I found out from one my soldiers wife that she wanted to work things out, and what I can tell from that conversation and the days, it was before she found out she was pregnant. Yes she said she didn't mean it and she was carefull. But we all know things can happen. No I can't get a girl pregnant anymore cause I have had the surgery!

Yes. I have always said before this, I would do anything to keep my wife happy and with me. After these mistakes we have both made, if thats what I have to do to keep our family together I will. yes it'll be hard but i think I can do it.

28, I'm glad you came back. I believe the resources here and the good folks who are willing to help could possibly proove to be the absolute most effective way to handle a very difficult position you've found yourself in. I don't believe there is a more painful thing to go through and unfortunately it's not the kind that goes away totally. Rather, it comes and goes sometimes stroger and sometimes less.
But it's life, and there are ways to thrive even given this incredible adversary.
I think you may choose to read my thread as an example of things to do right and things to do wrong (and the LT consequences of following the wrong opinions). To post your situation, You will need to go to the Other Child board and probably boost up your post count to post there -- or notify the mods of your situation.
We will need you to answer some questions. And you will have to take some time to think about how you want to proceed. The ball is in your court (including with your WW, and with us).
Do you want to implement MB philosophy in your life and in your marriage to set yourself on a different path?
Also -- I don't believe you answered this: does the OM know about the pregnancy and his POTENTIAL paternal involvement?
What have you read here about affairs and pregnancy?
Would your ww be willing to come here and get some guidance?
