I'm new here and I am having an issue in my marriage and have no one to ask. I recently had knee surgery and was given two different pain killers (the first pills made me sick). I found one jar of pain killers nearly empty in my husband's night stand as well as empty blister packs of benzos, clopin. He is an ex heroine addict that has been clean 5 years or so. I confronted him and found out that my husband has been taking benzos (like clonopin and valum) on and off for years, and buys pain killers from his brother (who has a terrible drinking and pill problem that effects his life and kids) when he wants to relax. He never told me this and I am very upset. He says he doesn't have a problem and will do it once a month or so, that he won't stop or get rid of the pills. I am not against drugs wholy, I allow him to smoke pot as he has a license to do so and I drink a beer sometimes on the weekends. Am I overreacting, what do I do if I'm not? We have a 18 month old son.

Hi tobeforever, welcome to Marriage Builders. A drug is a drug is a drug, so all your husband did was switch his source of addiction. He probably takes much, much more than he has admitted. Addicts always lie about how much they take. Your husband should not be taking any narcotics at all, no pot, no booze, no nothing.
And no, you are not overreacting. I would demand that he quit all drugs and enter a drug treatment program like Narcotics Anonymous. All your husband did when he quit heroin was switch addictions.
It's ok to not be against drugs, but you should be against any drugs for your husband because he is an addict. He should have nothing stronger than coffee or soft drinks.

Your drinking is minimal, as it should be. One beer once a week or less is a pretty good level, which you should try to keep to. And no, you are not overreacting. All your husband did when he quit heroin was switch addictions It's ok to not be against drugs, but you should be against any drugs for your husband because he is an addict. I will not spend my life this way.

How long have you been married? Is this a first marriage for you both?
