My wife has had an affair; she actually told me about it, stating that she felt guilty. I believe that she is being truthful when telling me that she is no longer having the affair. But she has a 'friendship' with another male. She lied to me about her whereabouts and actually went to a concert with the guy. They have had some conversations with the guy, that I do not like; and at times of the night, that I do not agree with either.

I don't believe anything to the extent of an affair has occured, but I asked her to refrain from speaking to him on a personal level. She agreed and told me that she would no longer speak to him. I found that she lied about the no longer speaking. They communicate mostly through Google Talk; and she actually created a second account to 'hide' the conversations. I found the account because on a whim I decided I wanted to 'check' if she was being truthful. So we went through the whole thing of why I don't feel comfortable with her talking to him, her saying that she will not do it again, blah blah blah...

I want to believe that she isn't. I have been watching the accounts I know about for the last month and have not seen any activity. The odd part is that she says that she didn't tell him to stop contacting her, yet he has not reached out in over a month. Odd that he wouldn't at least say Hi, if she never officially cut it off.

I was wondering if anyone knew of a software to install that would allow me to view her phone's screen, to see if there are any commuications with this guy, as none of the softwares I have seen track Gtalk conversations. I just want to know if there are any other accounts or ways they are talking.

Thanks for any advise.

Your WW may be a serial cheater, which is a person who is in an affair, ending an affair or planning/starting an affair at all times.

Was the first affair ever exposed or was it just forgiven and swept under the rug.

God Bless

The sexual affair was exposed by her own admission. There were not any overly overt signs (small things that I neglected should have given me a clue). But I never had any real reason to believe it occurred. So when she admitted it to me on her own, we went through a tough time and I forgave her and we spoke about how we would recover.

I want to believe her and get back to a point where I can trust her. I don't believe in just giving up on our marriage. But there have been many lies exposed. I don't want to be naive again and just accept what is said as truth. But I also don't want to have to continually ask her about her activities. I am at the point now, that if any further untruths are revealed, we will have to just go our separate ways.

This is the reason I want to be able to 'pop' in on what she is doing on her phone. SMS and internet activity is not enough, as there are many web apps that would circumvent those mediums.

@BrainHurts -- I will read the link you sent.

I appreciate the replies.

Who is the OM? How did they meet?

Have you read the Exposure 101 thread yet?

Exposure does not mean that she told you, it means that the affair is brought to the daylight. It means asking all people who could influence her to stop the affair should be involved to help stop the affair. This includes her friends and family, the friends and family of the other man.

Also you should install extraordinary precautions, by eliminating everything in your life that helped make the affair possible. Including internet chatting and smart phones.

Obviously, she did not change her way because she was let of the hook easily. She should prove to you that she is worthy to stay in a relationship with you. At this time, she hasn't.

Hi WAtchme, welcome to Marriage Builders. I want to ask you a couple of questions in response to your comment above. If a practicing alcoholic changes the name of his drinks to "business drinks" will he be sober? It is the same principle with your wife's affair. You can't change a romance back into a friendship because the romantic feelings will always be there.

If you want to recover your marriage, it will take much more than you have going on here. The first step is for her to end all contact for life. ALL CONTACT. You can't go onto the next steps of recovery until that step is taken.

And I would strongly advise that you expose the affair. Please read my exposure thread and follow the steps there. Is the OM married? If so, his wife should be at the top of your list.

And are you and your "wife" married? Any children? How long married?

I will clarify a bit -- Me and my wife are indeed married of 7 years. We have one child currently 2 years old; and a second due in 16 days (conceived, by me, months after finding out about the affair.

The sexual affair took place roughly 18 months ago, although I found out about it only 12 months ago. The OM is single, and used to work with her. She went out dancing with single female friends (which I initially had reservations about) on her birthday and ran into the guy. He was moving away, and expressed that he always had a crush on her, and wanted to act on those feelings. Rather than push him away, she entertained his talking and eventually had an affair - Summer 2012. She then again had sex with him approx 2 months later. According to her that was the last time she had contact with him physical or otherwise, by her own decision. She felt the need to tell me Dec 2012.

The guy she is having conversation with, is a different guy, that she currently works with. She went to a concert with him in Aug 2012, and says that she doesn't see him in a sexual way and nor does he. They talked a lot before I found out about the affair, normally about politics and current affairs. There was nothing overly disrespectful in her conversations with him (at least what I dug up); but I wanted her to cease talking to him too, as he is another single male, they work together and in my eyes have began to form a 'relationship' whether it's a friendship or not. I expressed to her the fact that, initially she would have describe how she viewed the OM would have been the same -- just a friend or like a brother (no such thing). I believe that they talk too much, and I am not a friend of the guy. I do not believe that married couples should have friends of the opposite sex, that are not also friends of the spouse. Also, if this guy was a friend, he would not be comfortable 'going out' with a married woman knowing that her husband was unaware.

The reason I wanted to view her screen remotely, is that she told me in Jan 2013, that she understood and would refrain from speaking to this 'friend' again. I have found that she has still been talking with him, she created other internet accounts to have these conversations, and he is aware that she did so to continue speaking to him. I have seen in this conversations where they both believe there is nothing wrong with it, because it is not like that. But, I have tried to explain that while it may not be 'like that' at this time, they are fostering an environment where it could become that.

And just the deceitfulness is not helping me to trust her at all. So while she is now saying again that she is not talking to him, I can't just openly believe that.

I wouldn't say that she has gotten off 'easy'. I will say that her being pregnant has influenced a lot of my actions. I do not want to cause any stress that may affect my child negatively. I do not want to be the cause of postpartum depression. But she has endured scrutiny about the activities she is doing, details of the interaction with the sexual affair and me continually questioning the logic of what she has told me. But that is all an effect of her lying, so I don't feel remorse for that.

I grew up with an absentee father, so I am doing everything I can to avoid putting my son, and his future sibling. But if lying is going to be the staple in our relationship, I can still be a great father with being a depressed husband.

Thanks for the great explanation! I understand completely now. Unfortunately, I don't know how you can watch her conversations if standard spyware like eblaster or flexispy won't pick it up. Have you checked both of those apps?

I suspect that her "friendship" has already gone beyond just that or she wouldn't be sneaking around and contacting him. That is a pretty sure sign of at least an emotional affair. I agree with your thinking that you should get the goods as a first step. If it is an emotional affair, I would be prepared to ask her to leave the job.

We have a step by step plan that to affair proof your marriage, get the truth on the table and restore the love to your marriage. It really does work if you use it. Your wife won't feel like a defense witness and you won't feel so much anxiety anymore. I would check out the the "start here first" thread and take it from there. Read it and come back and discuss.

Thanks MelodyLane. I have read the Exposure 101 post. I will need to pray about this. We have been involved with counseling and spoken with our pastor. That is as far as the 'exposure' has gone.

As far as the physical affair, I am positive that is over; as there are really no opportunities for it to happen. No trips, no late nights, I call her at work just about everyday (different times; not an attempt to check on her, more so to foster communication). I have compiled a 'profile' of how she interacted with that guy, and that is something I am able to track.

I can not say for certain if the 'friendship' ever went past what I know. I know there was at least some sort of connection, and regardless of the level -- it is not acceptable. Even if they are just talking news, conspiracies, blah blah blah. I do not care.

What I believe is that she naive to the dangers of these types of 'friendships' and how unhealthy they are. Or at least she was. She does not understand that if a man is spending that much time talking to you, if he finds you attractive at all, in his mind he may be 'biding his time' for an opportunity. And he may not feel that way currently, but as this relationship develops, he can 'catch' feelings just as a woman may.

She indeed, may not be in contact with him any longer. But again, we have come to a point where there is no value in her 'word'.

I may just continue on the rebuilding path, and work on believing her. I spent a few weeks, sleeping in our basement to give space, without having my son suffer and have only recently come 'back to bed'. I am at the end of my forgiveness rope. So if something surfaces, which I have tried to explain, it always does, I will just chalk it up as part of my life journey.

Thanks for listening....

If you pray about it, you will get the answer to expose because that is based on biblical principles. The ONLY thing that benefits from secrecy is the affair. Affairs thrive on secrecy so keeping them a secret helps them thrive. However, your first order of business is to find out what is going on.

I suspect she is in an emotional affair, which is just as bad, but is the step before it goes physical.

I agree with you. That is how affairs start. But the fact that she is sneaking around to talk to this guy tells me it is more.

That is how 99% of affairs begin. And it is almost always with people who say "I would never do that!!" They are the ones with the worst boundaries. And you already know she has very poor boundaries. I would show her this article: The Risk of Opposite-sex Friendships in Marriage

She indeed, may not be in contact with him any longer. But again, we have come to a point where there is no value in her 'word'.

And that is wise. It is too much trust that leads to affairs.

I would not work on believing her and I would not give her any "space." "Space" is not good for marriages. You can't fix your marriage if you are operating in a detached state.

PLEASE get yourself the book Surviving an Affair. The program in that book can save your marriage. Marriage Builders is completely different from any other marriage program in that a) it is biblically based and b) it has a step by step action plan to restore your marriage. No psychobabble! And it really does work.

Not having a plan to recover your marriage is a plan to fail. Here is the plan outlined by Dr Harley in another article:

But when it's followed, it always works. The plan has two parts that must be implemented sequentially. The first part of the plan is for the unfaithful spouse to completely separate from the lover and eliminate the conditions that made the affair possible. The second part is for the couple to create a romantic relationship, using my Basic Concepts as a guide.

I'll describe these two parts to you in a little more detail.

The first step, complete separation from the lover and eliminating the conditions that made the affair possible, requires a complete understanding of the affair. All information regarding the affair must be revealed to the betrayed spouse, including the name of the lover, the conditions that made the affair possible (travel, internet, etc.), the details of what took place during the affair, all correspondence, and anything else that would shed light on the tragedy.

This information is important for two reasons: (1) it creates accountability and transparency, making it essentially impossible for the unfaithful spouse to continue the affair or begin a new one unnoticed, and (2) it creates trust for the betrayed spouse, providing evidence that the affair is over and a new one is unlikely to take its place. The nightmares you experience are likely to continue until you have the facts that
will lead to your assurance that your husband can be trusted.

An analysis of the wayward spouse's childhood or emotional state of mind in an effort to discover why he or she would have an affair is distracting and unnecessary. It takes precious time away from finding the real solutions. I know why people have affairs: We are all wired for it. Given certain conditions, we would all do it. Given other conditions, however, none of us would do it. So the goal of the first step is to discover the conditions that made the affair possible and eliminate them.

After the first step is completed, the second step is to create a romantic relationship between you and your husband using my 10 Basic Concepts here
as your guide. While your relationship may be improving, it won't lead to a romantic relationship because you are not being transparent toward each other. Unspoken issues in a marital relationship lead to a superficiality that ruins romance.

Your nightmares are only the tip of the iceberg. They are but a small reflection of the suffering you experienced when you discovered your husband's affair, and the fear you have that the suffering will be repeated. You have no assurance that the affair is over because you don't even know who the other woman is. You are being asked to trust your husband, who has already proven to be untrustworthy. For all you know, he could be working with her, or you could be going to the same church, or she could be
your neighbor. And since he won't discuss the details of how the affair took place, you have no assurance that another affair will not take its place.

Infidelity is not something that can be swept under the rug. While those who have affairs want to forget about it and move on, those who are betrayed must take very specific steps before they can fully recover. In your case, those steps have not been taken, and as a result, your fear persists. I will send you a complimentary copy of my book, "Surviving an Affair," if you send me your address. It will describe these two steps to you and provide you with a roadmap toward full recovery. But the path will require full disclosure of all details.
