Hi all,
My son called today to let me know there is a chance he will be a father. He had unprotected sex on June 8 with a girl. She apparantly had unprotected sex on May 22 and May 24 with another young man. Her period was due on June 15. She is definitly pregnant and had a blood test (HCG) i think last week. She told my son that the Dr told her that she almost certainly became pregnant on the 8th rather then the other dates because of her (HCG) count. Is it possible to pin point it to that accuracy? Does anyone here know how safe prenatal dna testing is? She told my son it could be done in August at 9 weeks .But I have been reading and am worried it is unsafe for the fetus and possibly not recommended unless amnio is already being done for other purposes. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Joy

To the best of my knowledge, amniocentesis (sp?) is the ONLY way to do DNA testing while the fetus/baby is in utero. And the number one risk of amnio is preterm labour (however I am not sure of the percentages on it). I cannot imagine a dna test being done unless there are other factors that need to be looked into.
For the most part, again to the best of my knowledge, DNA testing is done AFTER the birth of the baby (through blood samples or saliva swabbing).
One thing I do know for sure, is that she could claim your son as the baby's father, and the only way to prove or disprove it would be a paternity test at HIS cost.
A site online that I adore is called www.babycenter.com and it has SO much information on there. I'd suggest checking it out.
Take care!
Karen
