I caught just a bit about how hard it is to trust and know what someone's character really is these days ... and the part you said about sticking to your animals just totally grabbed me because I just saw this quote yesterday:

I never married, because there was no need. I have three pets at home which answer the same purpose as a husband:
I have a dog that growls every morning,
a parrot that swears all afternoon,
and a cat that comes home late every night.

LOL!
Funny! Wish I had thought about that all those years ago!
Hmmmm, but then I wouldn't have my three angels.
They are worth everything to me, even this pain.

Hi almostthere:
I've been out-of-town on a trip to the country, or I would have responded sooner. Thanks for the laugh. I know for sure that if I were single again, I'd stick with my furry and feathered companions.
Oh, yes. I like the new name. It sounds so hopeful.
Estes

If you can start the day without caffeine,
if you can get along without pep pills,
if you can always be cheerful, ignoring aches and
pains,
if you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles,
If you can eat the same food every day and be grateful for it,
if you can understand when your loved ones are too
busy to give you any time,
if you can overlook it when those you love take it out on you when, through no fault of yours, something goes wrong,
If you can take criticism and blame without
resentment,
if you can ignore a friend's limited education and
never correct him/her,
if you can resist treating a rich friend better than a poor friend,
If you can face the world without lies and deceit,
if you can conquer tension without medical help,
if you can relax without liquor,
if you can sleep without the aid of drugs,
If you can honestly say that deep in your heart you have no Prejudice against creed, color, religion or politics,
Then, you have ALMOST reached the same level of
development as Your dog.
