Hugs Pepper....this is so sad! I am watching it too and it is so awful. My heart breaks for the families of the astronauts. How awful for the people watching it and taping it too. I can't even imagine how shocking it must have been. So very very sad. BH

I am pretty close to Dallas and we heard a loud sonic boom right around 8:00! I guess it was the shuttle going over.

The saddest thing about this kind of event is that we all have our dreams and hopes for humans working together as inhabitants of a PLANET, not a bunch of squabbling countries and faiths, riding with the victims of the tragedy.
And then the witch-hunt investigations that follow...

Now they are talking about the black box. Which on CNN they would not comment about the box. They have the families in quaranteen because all the families were there to greet their loved ones. This is so sad, so sad. There is the thought of terrorism, they have to think this with all that has happened. Also, the shots earlier of a piece of the shuttle hanging on the bottom. They are showing shots of the piece.
But to have complete cut-off on communication. They are asking many questions. And all the pieces that fell, and the threat of inhaling the toxic fumes, odor. Can cause death in 48 hours. My Lord, this is terrible.

I'd be surprised if a black box, if the shuttles carry any, could have survived that. I could be wrong, but the telemetry might give the same information that a black box would, for as long as the link lasted.
THe toxic material they're probably talking about is the hydrazine fuel for the attitude thrusters. This is great stuff in that it doesn't need an oxidant mixed in. But it is poisonous. When the shuttle lands, you don't see the crew get out immediately because they make sure that there's no hydrazine left in the thruster nozzles. I'd be surprised if any of it would make it to the ground, but I'm not an engineer, so if you live around where the debris has fallen, definitely leave it for the experts to handle.
Terrorism would have to have been by means of an explosive on the shuttle, or something else on it. I can't imagine anything getting past security. And why wait until re-entry to cause an "attack?" At or shortly after launch would make more sense. Not that terrorism makes sense.

Not Terriorism. And NO black box. They don't do the black box on the shuttle. They have a unit that sends info constantly to Nasa, but no recording of events that are like on a airliner so I heard. Also, I have friends in TX who were told by unmentioned source, Authority though, that there is some radioactive particles. I don't know if I believe this or how it could be. Possible absorption just from sun in outer space? If anyone wishes to write the Prime minister of Israel a note of condolences, here is the address. For Ariel Sharon. I've sent mine already. pm_eng@pmo.gov.il All families and both countries in prayers. God bless, LouLou

WOW, they are finding debris just south of me all over the place. It spreads almost to Kemp to the west and all the way to the Louisiana border to the east. Thats a 180 mile stretch. I haven't heard of any debris landing here in Longview, though. How very sad!

I was there for Challenger, and it's something you never forget, as many who witnessed it today will say the same thing. Truly a very sad day. Jan 27.1967 Jan 28, 1986 Feb 1, 2003

I didn't see this thread yesterday when I posted mine on EN board. If you'd like others' thoughts, you can check that one out.
I'm sending prayers up for these families and our nation.

The first sonic boom was very sharp and loud enough to rattle the dishes. The rumbling (sounded like nearby thunder) lasted for about a minute.
