I need opinions / advice on any legitimate online distance schools where I could get a Master's Degree in Counseling.

I'm considering doing this as insurance against a very poor aviation environment that continues to threaten job security daily. Moreover, marriage counseling is something I've always thought about doing.

I need to be able to continue my current career as a pro pilot while pursuing the master's degree. Being on the road all the time dictates a distance learning program.

Thanks in advance!!

Why don't you contact one of the counselors that work for the Marriage Builders. Dr. Harley probably has the best marriage counseling background around.

Phoenix and Capella University offer therapy degrees.

Quick word here you cannot do all of it online. You are going to have to go there some of the time. In addition you do an internship (standard for all masters including brick and mortar programs). Might be able to do that locally with some form of supervised oversight and paper work. Perhaps a shelter for battered women in your area or a drug halfway house.

The brick and mortar university I am shooting to get in this spring has their own shelter for university students with the normal gammit of personal problems such as date rape, drugs, academic pressures and so on.

High Flight,

I was looking too. Most "clinical conseling" you can't do it distance learning, let alone online. If you want to do it not for getting license (charity work), the fastest is via http://www.regent.edu/acad/schcou/ . A christian based. They have one year program that give you M.A. but you have to take additional courses (ics) there if you want to get your license.

Let me know your other finding.

Thanks to all who've replied.

I have sent an email to Dr. Harley asking his advice. No reply yet.

I have also contacted Phoenix & Capella. Waiting for callback there too.

I will look into Regent. I would want to do it as a living IF I got laid off from flying, etc. Therefore would need to be licensed.

What are the basic licensing requirements in most or all states? Clinical time required as internship? Pass a board? Any good books for this career path?

High here is the info on Capella:

They have a residency requirement that I am pretty sure you have to go to one of their campuses to do. Now they have multiple phsyical campuses so one might be in your area and convient for you to do. It wasn't for me though.

Thanks Stunned ~ this is the most comprehensive I've found to date. Looks like a $30,000 + proposition for a master's degree. Plus licensing requirements and fees.

Internship and residency requirements look like about 2 week sessions x 2 over 2 years.

I'm looking into it.

hey- ditto what everyone has already mentioned-- but i would suggest that you look into your local universities (etc) to see if they offer distance learning...

i'm working on my master's in spec ed, and many of my classes are on-line thru videostreaming and blackboard.

my school has "classes" all over the country... it's the wave of the future and many universities are starting to offer on-line courses...
