Hello All, I had a long talk with my son last night about sports, he is recovering from a serious knee injury and subsequent surgery. We talking about his recovery and getting back into sports. Since he is Jr. in HS, I am always on him about using words correctly,and as he says "SAT words". In any event, I asked him "when he was cleared by the Doc, was he going to "participate" in basketball or was he going to "commit" to playing it well?" He sort of looked at me as only a 16 y/o boy can. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="images/icons/shocked.gif" /> And said I don't really understand the question. So we discussed the definition of those two words. In any event this discussion brought to mind a saying I heard decades ago and I thought you all might find it something to consider. "When dealing with breakfast one thing you need to understand, the chicken is involved, but the pig is committed." Somehow that statement seems worth of consideration when the subject of rebuilding a marriage is concerned. What do you think? God Bless, JL

Hi JL - thanks for your comments on my post.
I enjoyed reading your b'fast story.
Being the father of a 15 year old boy, I can identify with your conversation.
Applying your b'fast analogy to relationships, I'll add that getting "laid" and strutting away demands a lot less fortitude than rolling around in the mud, then "whole hog" jumping in the fire.
Oh well, I tried.

T, I am "committed" to one more tournament in Dec. Then I will "participate" by watching trash golf. Would you believe that our cable company switched channels so that instead of getting the Golf channel with our package we get the "travel channel". Booo HISSSSS. I don't need to see more travelogues on Las Vegas, give me Golf so that I can participate in my easy chair. No, T my wife just cannot muster that "what??, Ugh!, Whatever!, Ummm!" look like our 16 year old can. She just does not have it in her genes. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="images/icons/grin.gif" /> So are you committed to 4 days a week of golf in paradise this winter?? I am envious. I've been wondering how your son was doing.
If you recall, my 16 yo had ACL surgery in March. His surgeon was great - the scar is minimal and his rehab has been ahead of schedule.
He was qb this season again and the team went undefeated. He really didn't start coming into his "own" until about week 5. I don't know if it was the plays they were calling or him not being "sure" but he did finally look like the football player he was last year. Whew!
Now, onto basketball. He is going to play with the brace he thinks but I think he'll toss it in January. It's going to cramp his style and the doc said to wear it in practice at least.
On an interesting note, we were watching the local news early this fall and they interviewed a senior volleyball player from Bloomington, IL who had ACL surgery 2 months prior and was playing without a brace. Her doctor told her she didn't need it! She had a scholarship to play at a college but I can't remember which one now.
I can't believe the different ideas about rehab of a knee!!!!
Good luck to your son - I hope he forgets about his knee when he starts playing.

Avanit's is my absolute fav restaurant!!!!! But Monical's is a chain? Not outside of Illinois? Hmmm.... I love their family pleasers pizza. You can eat a whole pizza and not get "full" that's how thin the crust is!!! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="images/icons/grin.gif" /> I'm hungry - can ya tell? Yes, JL..I am committed. Just finished a four day golf excursion to Kauai (came in 7th overall, 2nd in my flight), got Leilana out there swinging away too. Came home to playing the next two days, rested one, and will be back at it tomorrow. I think committed may be the understatement. Out tourney was held at the same course the Grand Slam will be at in a week or so..they quit cutting the rough about 2-3 weeks before we got there..plenty of incentive to stay in the short grass. JL, consider the benefits of a Hawaiian vacation this winter. Not only could we get that belly putter grooved, I could teach your wife the importance of keeping "that look" in her repetoire. OK JL, let me see if I can tie this whole thing together... You and Twyla are talking golf - Dazed and I are talking food in Bloomington/Normal - I first turned Golf Pro at Highland Park in Bloomington and then was woohed away from there to be the asst. pro at Illinois State University's golf course in Normal... I then tried my hand at the mini tour but was too fat from all the gondola's and pizzas I ate in Bloomington. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="images/icons/grin.gif" /> How's that for tying it all together.... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="images/icons/wink.gif" /> Gib How's that for

I am just uncertain how "breakfast" turned into this, but it is cool. Actually, I am not telling T this but I am tuning up for the SuperSeniors. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="images/icons/shocked.gif" /> When you first mentioned Bloomington, I thought you meant Indiana. Figured we could transisition into hoops. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" /> You know all of my kids were active in sports and the two older ones played or are playing college sports, but I always thought that a golf scholarship was the way to go. No one pounding your head soft in practice everyday, no trying to transform your body into something it really doesn't want to be, able to walk at 50, and fun to do the rest of your life. When I quit playing college football, I never played that game again. When I quit playing college basketball, I did play it for awhile, but by mid-30's it was over too dangerous. But golf... that is the sport. You may not realize it but Golf in the US is the ONLY professional sport in the country. You only get paid what you win, no contracts, no appearance fees, nothing. You don't do well, you don't get paid. Now that is a pro sport. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" /> Can you imagine the NBA if those guys had to win to get paid. I envision a deal like the old whaling ships where they sign on for % of the profits, and if the team doesn't win, life is lean. I would be they would learn to shoot free throws then. Apologies to tennis players but I do think they get appearance money for some of the tournaments in the US. I may be wrong, if I am there are two professional sports in this country. Must go. JL

Ok, What does it mean when there are 6 golf courses within 10 miles of my house, and I have never played golf? I thought about it once, but couldn't bring myself to actually do it. Welllllll SS, It could mean a lot of things, but it probably means the same thing as what it means for me to always want to learn how to sail, and spent years living near water and in some cases literally on the shore of bodies of water, and I never learned. I am do darned lazy. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" /> OR it could mean that you have a heck of a lot more sense than I do. Have you ever considered what "golf" spelled backwards means? We do that to ourselves when we play <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="images/icons/wink.gif" /> . It is a game that bedevils the most sane of men(and Twyla <img border="0" title="" alt="[Razz]" src="images/icons/tongue.gif" /> ), but it is a game that has more books written about it and most of them HUMOR. So I'm thinking it is a testimony to a man with more good sense than I have. JL
