Well, Maya, perhaps they do...remember, the Old Testament was originally written in Hebrew.
Actually, the Lilith legend comes from Kabbalistic studies. Kabbalah is ancient Jewish mysticism. I'm not that knowledgeable about it, though I know people who are, and I can get some more info, if you'd like.
What I do know, and what is common knowledge, is that the "Adam and Eve" story in Genesis appears to be written in two pieces, because at one point it seems to be repetitive.
I studied Biblical Hebrew in college, and in the early parts of the story, "the woman" is refered to as (transliterated from Hebrew) "isshah" ( = "woman"), whereas she doesn't become "khevah" (also transliterated, as "Eve") until later on.
Some believe that because the woman is consistently refered to in that early section as just "the woman" means she's a different woman.
Just thought you might want to know.

Well, I do believe that we're not to "read" anything into scripture that isn't there. I'm just one of those conservatives that takes the Bible AS WRITTEN.
You can't "infer" that the woman means anything other than Eve if SHE's the ONLY WOMAN mentioned ...
Ah, but is she? That's the question.
I know that you have very strong beliefs, and I think that any "debate" between us about Biblical matters is futile...neither of us will ever change the other's mind.
But perhaps you can answer a question: Given that the Bible has been translated so many times, and put in writing by PEOPLE, how do we know that what we read hasn't been changed in translation?

Because God is the Author and Finisher.
It was written by men ... inspired by God.
"God said it, I believe it, and that settles it"
You're right, it does no good to debate this.

Oh Dazed!!!!
That second one made me do more than gag!
I was physically ill!
How lovely for that woman that she got to find herself with no thought of anyone else.
Last night I watched part of "Just Between Friends" with Ted Danson, Mary Tyler Moore.
I guess I must be closed minded if I can't see how enlightening infidelity can be.
[This message has been edited by wasstubborn (edited November 17, 1999).]

quote:
Given that the Bible has been translated so many times, and put in writing by PEOPLE, how do we know that what we read hasn't been changed in translation?

How else could 40 people write something over a several thousand year period and keep a consistent theme without it being overseen by God? I think it speaks for itself. It boils down to just how powerful do you believe God is? If He can create the universe we live in, certainly He can inspire someone to write His words acurately for all to see.
Oops, I think I'm debating here.
I'm with Maya. I believe Genesis to maps.
SHA
[This message has been edited by Sir Hurts Alot (edited November 17, 1999).]

Re: Bible..
I do believe it's more important how you live those words that are contained than quoting them. I had the same questions running through my mind about translations from Hebrew and Aramaic to English, and once I got past that and started looking at the truth contained, it wasn't hard to recognize that the Bible does give you a wealth of information that can lead to a richer life.
[This message has been edited by Connor (edited November 17, 1999).]
